I think the truth probably lies somewhere between andy_snap and rossybee's views.
In terms of curfews, knives, etc, yes that was the case around '92, but it was the same in a lot of places (Glasgow also had the curfew.)
I still drink there on a regular basis, was at the beer fest the other week and had a great night.
Unfortunately, like most towns these days, the town itself has died a death. Shop units are either empty, or used by charities.
People seem to prefer shopping at out-of-town, indentikit, enormoparks.
I remember, as a lad, getting taken up Paisley High St by me ma and pa on a Saturday afternoon. The town was throbbing, we'd constanlty have to stop and talk to people we knew, and there was always a man with a wee monkey on his shoulder playing a drum. Halcyon times.
