What did you do to your Lotus this weekend?

Post by mwmackenzie » Sun Jun 26, 2016 4:32 pm

I sent the day, well afternoon fecking with my lights.... On my Walshy day the other week my lights kinda went tits up, on the way down it was dark and the A1 was closed so on a diversion through a village I didn't spot a speed bump and HIT IT AT ABOUT 25MPH, my indicator flew out :( then on the track I heard a clatter and looked in my mirror and down the track was a big black thing, initial thought was bollox I've delaminated a tyre on day one, but on closer inspection it was my centre grill that had come off during heavy breaking when the HID ballast came lose and decided to keep going when the car was stopping, the driving light was also hanging off, I took the driving light off and popped it down the back of my seat with the ballast. So for the last week I've had no grill, and one driving light and wires hanging everywhere, oh and one of the main beam HID headlights stopped working on track too, she looked properly unloved!

So I bought some Philips Extreme White H1 and H7 Bulbs and some Halfrauds +90% H3's thinking this would sort me out... Well that was until I went to fit them, I started with the driving lights as they were easily accessible, I started by masking the front of the car and painting the crash structure and all behind the grill satin black, then painted the casings of the driving lights. The HID bulbs were tiger sealed into the light units and I couldn't find the wiring with the bulb holder, I think the wiring was butchered when the HID's were fitted so I fitted the lights but didn't wire them up, I'll try and reinstate at a later date. Next was the headlights, the drivers main beam had just become unplugged so I tiger sealed the ballast in a new location and plugged that back in, all good! I now have 2 headlights, happy days!

Next was the full beam lights, I wanted rid of the HID's in this case as they seem to take too long to heat up once switched on and flashing the lights to let someone out was pointless as they didn't come on quick enough, so I fitted the Philips H7 bulbs as the bulb holders were still in place for these, phew! They're meant to be white light but they're really yellow next to the HID's, still they're functional so that was the main thing as far as I was concerned. I think they're pointing at the sky so need to get to an MOT Station to check them, unless it was the driving lights but something was pointing at the passing aircraft in the fog on the way home from North Weald. I hope to be able to see where I'm going come the darker nights and will look to reinstate the driving lights at some point. The rain put a stop to play today :(

Quite happy with progress As I managed to tidy up a few bits and bobs while I was in about the front end with my satin black rattle can lol, car is all together again with grill and lights back on crash structure and other plastics round the rad that I could get off were all freshened up.. I had hoped to clay, cut, polish and seal the paint today but the damn rain put an end to my plans so off to blitz the kitchen now and hoover the house before the wife gets home :thumbsup

Sounds like you're making progress :thumbsup

What did I do to mine this weekend?
Drove it
Down to Innerleithen at 7am this morning via the B709 (fantastic road). The return journey was "interesting" in wet, greasy roads. Got sideways quite a few times

I shouldn't laugh really, but basically, Mark come into the high speed bend, was practising braking through the bend to a stop, got it pretty spot on turning the car with no locking of wheels, then the car threw up all over the airfield :damnfunny

Glad you're making progress with it.
I spent the last 2 days putting my 944 back together so am well versed in the other side of interesting cars too this weekend :|

I also replaced battery conditioner socket on the Elise which had lost a pin somehow. Another of the annoying Lotus positions working under the front bonnet bent over but without bending knees :(

Changed wheels. Got rid of all the dead bugs off the front end that had been there for the past 3 weeks then set about fixing the 'broken' passenger door opening mechanism.

Exterior button had been doing nothing since last SIDC track day. Interior lock button would rise and fall with the central locking (S2 Exige). Interior handle would open door as normal but pushing the exterior door opener did nothing at all. Removed the interior door card. Investigated interior of door with torch and camera. Got hand stuck in the door. Left skin somewhere in the door. Removed drivers door card to compare. Only then did I notice that the manual lock mechanism on the drivers door was in the horizontal and the passenger door was vertical. Took car key and 'unlocked' the passenger door from the outside with the key. Sorted. Put doors back together. Have a coffee and remind oneself to always check the obvious....Doh....

removed foot rest in a bid to top knuckle/knee interface issues

on the passenger door thing, i manually locked the passenger door a month ago, and now the flecking thing wont unlock. but it does from the inside fine. so passengers must wait until i let them in. or rather it makes taking roof on and off a bit more entertaining.

Nothing at the weekend, but did change all the rear bushes and fit a rose-jointed gearshift pivot point (instead of the usual, tried & failed usual poly-bush upgrade) during the week. 2 jobs down, 20+ to go....

Did you sit in it close your eyes and pretend to be out on the open road with it.... Must feel like a lifetime waiting to drive it again, only 4 weeks to go!

New set of mintex 1144 pads all round... Last set only managed 5months. Then replaced one of the lower fog lamps as a stone destroyed the glass. Finally I removed bits of dead bird from the right hand grill which had bent and wedged itself against my oil cooler. Then bent the grill back into position.

Needs a clean and an MOT later this week before heading off to Oulton Park end of next week.
