Just add it as a temporary car. Summing that's what it is. If not, insure it.

Additional temporary vehicle will probably be the cheapest way.
If not suitable there are companies online that'll do you 1-28 days insurance. Not that cheap though.

This plan to make a couple of hundred quid selling a car is rapidly becoming too much like hard work!

1/2 right. There's a specific exclusion to the TP cover re. cars, "not owned by you." Ergo if you own it, you can't rely upon the TP cover from another car to get you by.

The way I read this, if the car is SORN'd it doesn't need to be insured? Shirley that can't be correct, what if it is stolen or the garage goes on fire?

That's correct. If it goes on fire or is stolen, your loss. The government is only concerned with having untaxed and uninsured cars on the road.
