Best of luck mate.

Only tip I'll give you is that don't go too extreme on what you cut back on, the more people deprive themselves of things they like the more excuses they seem to find to break the diet. Further, the smaller the steps you take to better health, the more likely you are to keep them going and there's less chance of the 'boom and bust' that you hear of people on Atkins losing 5 stone only to slap 6 stone on within 3 months of 'completing' the diet.

The other thing you'll soon realise is that it seems hard to cut some things out to begin with, but after as little time as a week, you might be wondering how you managed to fit them all in.

Very best of luck mate, and stick to a balanced diet with some exercise. Booze is a horrific calorie adder so cut down on the mid-week drinking - perhaps even replace it with some exercise and double the benefit :)

Good decision Kenny, starting is the most difficult part of it. Never had to bother about weight as I do not like sugar, sweets, crips, fizzy drinks etc, but was a bit anal about fitness. The good thing is if you can get stuck in and stay with it for a while, you will feel guilty if you break your routine, i.e. don't go for a run or ride if you do not feel like it or the weather is bad. The same with food, you just need to cut out the rubbish and calorie stuffed products, it's not exactly a hardship to eat meat, fish, chicken, boiled or jacket potatoes. Also you can carry on with your Chinese and Indian food, just not too often.

Like smoking, the hardest part is starting then giving it a chance to work. Don't knock out everything enjoyable, drink less beer and substitute wine, have some cereal instead of crisps and chocolates when you get tempted, and if you cut out the sweet stuff you will soon get used to it.

Good luck.

Peter, your expression in that photo is not exactly what I'd call motivational!

However, look how happy I am after cycling 50 miles....

Cheers tut, I don't really have a sweet tooth so I am not missing too much besides the crisps. I do eat a lot of carbs, once the chips, bread, potatoes are gone this should help. Got my weekly diet fairly well sorted I think, cereal in the morn, homemade soup for lunch, fruit to snack on during the day. If I can keep up this exercise and actually see a difference this will be the biggest motivator to keep going.

Not launching into training with paratroopers and 60k cycles just yet I think, one step at a time :D

Good luck with your change of diet and lifestyle. Well done in starting now, instead of waiting until after the festive period. Remember the old saying . . . .

"A moment on the lips equals a lifetime on the hips" lol.

Hardest part in exercising, is getting your kit on, and getting out the front door.
"Diet 90% exercise 10%" best tip I heard from my mate.

Ps. I thought that you were selling your car too, or were you misleading us?

:withstupid

I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to lose weight for years now, by almost fasting and then pigging out etc etc.

I'm the best shape i've ever been in now mainly due to being careful with what i eat mon-fri and then not being too bothered at the weekend. Oh and the fact i'm now cycling 30 miles a week minimum. But it's now my lifestyle....i'm not on a diet or a get fit campaign....this is my normal life.

The key with that is to make a commitment to do exercise every Wednesday (say) regardless of the weather with a group of like-minded individuals......its the only way i've managed to stick to exercise and im not in a situation where i'm scared to let my fitness drop cos ive had to work so hard to get here.

Welcome to come out with us cycling ever wed :thumbsup

Good luck, I have lost 10kg this year even though I am sitting here with a packet of nik naks, some fruit pastells and a can of cream soda.

That's what I want to try and do, not just a quick fix to shed a few pounds but try and maintain a lower weight with better fitness. That said a quick fix to shift that first bit of weight would be good. I am 14 stone 5 pounds, so set myself a target of being under 14 by Christmas, second target of not putting it straight back on again over Christmas and the next target of under 13 by my birthday in early March.

Proper bikes or poof bikes? I hate road cycling so would probably give that a miss, but once a get a bit of fitness I'll join you on the mountainbikes. :thumbsup

This thread has inspired me... tonight I will cut out the coke from my Jack Daniels, and stick to just ice.

good on you kenny :thumbsup breaking the habits is the key......i think i would be a few stone heavier if it wasnt the fact that jan is a gym, rock climbing, biking and running freak...and gets me out on a few runs.

changing the sweet cravings for fruit is a good way to go and drink more water. i find this helps you feel a lot fresher and less hungry.....

Happy enough with path cycling, just hate being on the road with barstard car drivers trying to kill you.
