Several hotels in Braemar you could stay in or the Spittal of Glenshee Hotel would be worth a try, and much used SE lunch stop!

Thanks for that what is the Spittal of Glenshee Hotel like ? from the pictures I have found on the web I am not sure if it is a wood shack or a decent hotel to stay at?

I take it, it is a ski-ing place?

Is the food any good?

Will be coming in August. I am trying to miss out the Cities other than Edinburgh where we have tickets for the Millitary Tattoo.

Edinburgh is the last night before heading home. On route home I was planing to stop off at the Rosslyn Chapel before heading down the A7 to Carlisle.

But looking on a web sight earlier it had some big cover over it. Is that still the case?

Is it going to be quite a few of you? What dates in August?

All four cars that are going are couples (Aged between 40-64) and the trip is about aweek long stopping in different hotels along the way, which I am finding is becoming a bit of a night mare because all the different cars have different abilities at soaking up the miles. Which is playing havoc with the lenghts between the stages I would like. It would be easier if all the cars were Lotuses

The Exige is very good at at covering distance even in the fine Scottish rain. The other car may well be a Porsche which will also not have a problem soaking up the miles as well. But The two Caterhams may pose a problem if the weather is like it was when I last ventured up that way. I am not sure what the pace will end up like, although no one is racing. The Caterhams which are normally quick cars may slow things down a fair bit if it rains. The windscreen wiper just tend to smear the screen and it is not fun being in a 7 with the roof up for long distances..


I only say this as a warning because the pace my be slower than you (Or I) would like.

Some parts of the trip have already been booked. Would you be wanting to join up for the whole trip or just for certain parts?

The trip will be finishing at your home town of Edinburgh.

Tickets for the Tattoo might be a problem because I had problem getting them for us all to be together when I ordered them in December. Mind you you might be feed up with the Tattoo seeing its in your home town.

Would it be just you or you & your partner?

I don't see any reason why you couldn't come along, It would just need a bit of sorting out that I hadn't planned for, But that is not the end of the world. Originally I was just planning this for me & my partner which would have been easier because we wouldn't have needed anu real planning. Amazing how things change

Sounds like it would real good fun, and would be cool to cruise with a few other Lotuses...I actually have my Honeymoon in August too, and its for a week so not sure if I can justify taking the time of work. SOunds like you don't need the additional headaches too!!

I've only been to the Spittal a couple of times for lunch, and the food and service were good.
It is a cross between a wood shack and a decent hotel

I've never stayed in any of those hotels, but the two in Ullapool look good, one I would recommend is the ceilidh place
Again I've not stayed in any of the Oban hotels either, but I've heard that Ards House is good.

Have spent a night in the "ceilidgh place" and it was good and the meal at night was excellent.


I did notice the Manor House in Oban is listed in the Alistair SawDays "special places to stay" web site . I use his recommendations a lot for when I am going abroad and the hotels/B&B's have never dissapointed:http://www.sawdays.co.uk/

We also had a similar problem as you are having - me in the Lotus, mate in the Evo and his friends in BMW M3/Audi A4 convertible. Luckily we just vanished and let the BM's sat nav take care of everthing

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for places for short stops that would be of interest in these three sections of the route I plan on taking.

ie:. Places of interest, Historic attractions, Coffee & Lunch Stops Great views Ect.

Section A;
Section B;
Section C;

A: Plenty of distilleries on that section.

B: A bit north of Ullapool is Kylesku, worth a stop at the hotel, and too see the bridge and if time allowed a boat trip to see the highest waterfall in UK.
At Durness there is Smoo Cave, also just outside Durness there is a great beach just to the west.

C: Inverary Castle, Crarae Gardens, around Lochgilphead there are lots of ancient monuments, standing stones etc, http://www.kilmartin.org/
The Island of Seal and the Bridge over the Atlantic, south of Oban, could be worth a wee detour.

Can only speak for Manor House Oban - nice small 'country house' style hotel on the edge of Oban - very quiet and douce tho'
