help me price my car to sell
help me price my car to sell
I have been meaning to sell the Elise over the past 12 months but as many of my previous posts have revealed there has been one thing or another that has stopped this happening.
FINALLY I think I’m in a position to shift it and was looking for a bit of guidance on price.
I have trawled through the ads on pistonheads and autotrader, I’ve also checked glasses and parkers price guides, here are my findings……
1. Parkers Private good condition selling price is £7,835 (IMO the car is in good condition, worst case it’s a bargaining tool for the buyer to take £100 of it)
2. This is based on a car with an annual average mileage of 10k, which would = 100k miles !!! I’ve done 40k miles so there needs to be an adjustment there ???
3. The liz also has a number of mods that would add value or at least make it more attractive, I know you will never get anywhere near the amount of money spent but you would look for something back. (Exhaust, Decat, ITG Carbon enclosed filter, Re-prog ECU, Techno. Wheels etc.)
4. Full service history by Lotus again counts for something but nothing major.
Summary
Base cost : £7,835
Mileage adjustment : +£600 (£100 per 10k miles less, optimistic ?????)
Adjust for mods : +£500
FLSH : +£100
12 month MOT : +/-£0
6 month TAX : +/-£0
New rear tyres in 3k miles : -£100
TOTAL £8,935.00
In trader/pistonheads an elise with no mods or very little 1997/1998 with 40/50k+ miles is hovering around 8.5k to 9k
What’s your views on the above and how I’ve guestimated the selling budget of £9k
All opinions welcome
Thanks

I'd say mods rarely add any value to car unforunately, best to keep the modded bits and flog them seperately.

I don't think your far off the mark with 8500 - 9k.
The bits you've done only really put buyers your way rather than value to the car - if you've buying and have a budget then it doesn't matter what the car's had done - if you can't afford then you can't afford.
Good luck with the sale

You may get lucky and get £9k depending on who (if anybody) comes to see it.
I think realistically somewhere nearer £8k will ensure you shift it.
I would take Neil up on his offer. I have no idea what the wheels are worth, but they will be worth more to you off the car than on it.
With regards to mods, most people on here would be delighted to buy an elise with these fitted, but if we all think back to when we first considered buying our first elise, the majority of us would shy away from mods, preferring an "unmolested" example. There will likely be more first time buyers in the market place than veterans.
Remember the prices on PH & Autotrader are asking prices, you never quite know what they achieve and indeed whether or not they sell.
If I were in your position, and time was on my side, I would get it as far back to standard as possible and punt the mods. A bit of hassle but would ensure that you have the best possible deposit for your S1 Exige/S2 Exige/340R/Caterham etc

In my experince Parkers is always wayyy out, nothing more than a very rough guide. I mean where do they get their prices from? The auctions? How many Elises go through there on a regular basis, not enough for statistics.
To get an accurate price watch a few go on Ebay (auctions not classified), those cars have actually sold. Then add a bit for a private sale over an auction.
As for mods, I would say they marginally add to your value in theory but as they dramtically reduce your market they actually reduce its value in practice. Most people looking for an Elise in your price range are looking for their first one, and your mods will put them off. They will fear it has been thrashed and the wheels mean it won't look like the car they imagine owning. In addition as it will be their first one they probably will imagine a standard car being quick enough for them so mods are a waste for them. But you didn't buy them to make money did you
I spoke to you last year about friends who wanted to buy one, they ended up getting a standard one for about 10% less than you were asking (sorry to be the bearer of bad news!) with a lot fewer miles. Albeit without the FLSH but a specialist service history nonetheless and they are car nuts so weren't as worried about FLSH as some.
Hope that helps, and doesn't depress you!

Re: help me price my car to sell
If you have the standard parts you should refit them and sell on the other bits without doubt.
People pay 350 quid new for those ITG boxes, so surely you'll punt it for 100 on the various Lotus classified lists sooner or later. If the ECU is an emerald, you can easily sell it for 400 quid, etc., etc.
If you make 500-750 through selling on the non-standard parts and spend nothing on putting the standard parts back on the car it has the same value as before (in fact more - I would never buy a decat car, for example).
Then price your car to sell - I would guess at 8K it will shift in due course, at 9K you'll struggle to get anyone to come and look at it.
This is almost always true - for example, Andy recently lucked out buying a complete 135R engine for the price of just the gearbox - if the guy had split the engine into box, engine block, head, manifolds, alternator, starter, etc., etc. he would easily have made twice as much on the sale.
Cheers,
Robin
