Disks

Post by Gareth » Wed Jan 25, 2006 6:07 pm

Not driven the car for around 10 days until last night.
Brakes were seized a little so just tried to edge the car forward. A wee clunk and it's fine but the brake feel is very lumpy. Almost feels like it's got a warped disk. Drove to work and back and it's still the same.

Any ideas?

its just rust build up on the discs.

get them really hot with a few big stops, that'll sort them

dont park with the hand brake on, just leave it in gear

Mine does this alot for some reason.
After a couple of heavy breaks it seems to sort it self out. :?

I was tempted to park in gear, h'brake off, but something always tells me its safer to put it on. It won't actually damage calipers/pistons/disks/pads will it?

Heat the disks up before you park and it should help. I used to do that when I parked outside, left foot braking for a while before stopping sorks well :). Now I've got a garage I just leave it in gear with the handbrake off. Do what Neil says to sort them out.

Even if the handbrake is off the disks will still rust up and seize to the pads. The front jam to dont they? As Si says, if you get them hot before stopping as they cool the pads will retract a tad and it'll help. But it really just needs to get braked hard to get them cleaned up. Or used more often.

As above,

I tend to drive the first few miles with light brake application with my left foot (providing there is no-one behind me)

Soon cleans them up

OR you could always spray the discs with WD40 when you park up, that will stop them from rusting over :D

Disclaimer: I am not liable in anyway if you are stupid enough to spray lubricant on a friction surface!
