Walsh wins first Elise Trophy race
Funnell and Harvey complete top three

As in qualifying earlier in the day there was no stopping Andrew Walsh, who drove to a lights-to-flag victory ahead of Mark Funnell and David Harvey in the first ever Lotus on Track Elise Trophy race.

Away from the line Harvey and Mark Gooday appeared to get bogged down from second and fourth place on the grid, so Funnell and Sean Bicknell were quick to take advantage and move into second and third place. Harvey soon fought back in his 340R though, snatching third from Bicknell.

Further down the order Malcolm Sanders and Steve Williams became involved in a close battle over sixth place, as David Rowatt became the unlucky first retirement in the series when he pulled his Elise off the track at Clearways in a cloud of smoke. Sanders would become the second of just two retirements when his car suffered a similar fate on lap 11.

After a strong start at the front Walsh managed to pull out a short lead but Funnell was able to close the gap as the duo carved their way through the traffic. Unfortunately for him, after they'd got through the backmarkers Walsh was able to stay ahead to the chequered flag to claim overall victory. Further back Steve Williams took victory in Class B with sixth overall while Gavin Kirby was the highest placed Class A finisher, in 10th.

The most nailbiting finish award went to Nick Kaye, who crossed the line side-by-side with Russell Treasure to claim eighth place by just a single thousandth of second.

Lotus On Track Elise Trophy Race 1 Result

1) Andrew Walsh (Lotus Elise S1) 20m39.671s
2) Mark Funnell (Lotus Exige) +1.838s
3) David Harvey (Lotus 340R) +8.577s
4) Sean Bicknell (Lotus Exige) +9.949s
5) David Skeggs (Lotus Elise) +26.010s
6) Steve Williams (Lotus Elise S1) +27.768s
7) Andrew Kell (Lotus Elise S2) +45.037s
8) Nick Kaye (Lotus Elise) +47.537s
9) Russell Treasure (Lotus Elise) +47.538s
10) Gavin Kirby (Lotus Exige S2) +1 LAP

Mr Skeggs did well too - +26s (0.5 lap I suppose) behind the S/C Hondas in a 1.9 K16 (unless I missed an engine change for him ...).

Of course Brands is not going to reward the high power engine as much as some of the bigger circuits, but even so, Kell really needs to pull his finger out ;-)

If I had been a bit more organised I would have gone to watch it, but this weekend is a big weekend for my son's choir (or quire, if you prefer), so was never going to be popular ;-)

Cheers,
Robin

And I would say Sean Bricknell did excellent!
4th with a 1.8K series, just behind the 2 SC Hondas and the 340R (which if I understand well was on his own class, with also a K).

I would say good result on the first race for an engine that has been slagged by most people, but beat all NA Hondas and most SC Hondas as well!

But the icing on the cake was on race 2, didn't Sean get 2nd?

Roll on the K! :P

Indeed - I only highlights Skeggs 'cos I know him and knew what his engine was (at least last time I talked to him, anyway) - hadn't realised there were so many other K-series cars close to the front - does anyone have a link to the entrant's classes and specs?

[Edit: I just found some of the info on LOT site, but a complete final list would be interestin if anyone has one or knows where to find one].

Mind you two cars retired in a cloud of smoke - what's the betting they were both K's too :-)

Cheers,
Robin
