How do you use this new-fangled thing?

Post by robin » Tue Apr 04, 2006 7:09 pm

It may be obvious to some, but how do I quickly and easily find only new messages in threads? I have discovered that "mark all threads read" clears the new message status on all threads. I have discovered the little ->[ ] white envelope thing that seems to take me to the end of the thread.

Am I doing something wrong, or is there now way to get to the point you left off at?

Cheers,
Robin

Have you tried the little blue "veiw all new posts since last visit" top right of the front forum page?

Or have I misunderstood the question? :scratch

OK,

But that gives me a list of topics on which there have been new postings since I last read the board.

What it doesn't do (as far as I can tell) is take me to the latest posting I haven't read in each topic. So for a 15 page whopper I need to page through it to find where I last read, to read the rest?

For example, I read the early part of Dave's appearance on the BBC1 thing, and a lot of new stuff has been posted, but I have no way of getting to where I last read in this topic ...

Cheers,
Robin

Yup, would be useful but I've not found a way to do it... :(

In the list of posts since last visit there is a bit that shows the last post, who it was by and just beside who it was by there is a tiny little arrow pointing at a document icon.

If you click that, it will take you straight to the last post.

Ah but that's last post but not last unread post...

Once we eventually get the forum moved over to Sanjoy's server, we'll have the option of a whole load of phpbb mods to install. These include things like RSS feeds, which might help you get what you want Robin (haven't seen the phpbb one myself yet). JJ also asked about a virtual garage thing, which I've seen on other forums. I will let you all know when I get round to sorting something out about it.

Cheers

Si.

I've just joined the Golf GTI forum, and they have an RSS feed which is showing up new posts in my Google Desktop. I'm very impressed.

Is this feature available for SE2 any time soon then?!

I assume it would be a database mod, so not a light undertaking - very useful though... We'll see how busy Mr Ironside is.... 8)

Have a look through the mods list on the phpbb site. I'll put in any anyone chooses.
