Longevity of engines (Looking for a 2nd car)

Post by Sanjøy » Mon Dec 11, 2006 8:47 pm

Lots of high milers out there and plenty of 4 year old cars that have been doing 25k per year.

Would it be safe to say that if I bought a 100k car I would expect another 80 out of it ?

e.g.

BMW 320d
BMW 330d
Merc 250d
Rover 75 CDT

Naturally the rest of the car is going to be aging, what would be the top 5 things I am looking for ?

SP (cheers Robin you have me hunting 330ds now and I may have found one...)

I'd stay away from BM diesels with more than 100k on the clock. That's when they start to cost you serious money. Especially the 330d or 530d.

Luckily ours has 30K on the clock and we do 5K a year in it, so I think the car will fall apart before the engine. :-)

hows about a cracking 03 corsa active 1.0  - only 17K on the clock, full service history, air con, alloys , metallic blue.

Its the girlfriends car but never gets used as she just uses my type R, she is looking for about £3,750 ish for it but would certainly do you a deal on it. Not the fastest beast in the world but v economical and low insurance.

if your interested let me know, its only up the road in Morningside if you want a look

hats off to Alix's old L-reg Toyota Carina E. 100k miles on it, sold it to my mate for £50 and he's got another 10k out of it. If that's what a 12-year olf Toyota engine can do, I'd imagine an Avensis from 6 years or so ago would be better still and would cost feck all in comparison to a prestige german marque.

Think outside the box old bean :) Mixed thoughts on a Rover, my K is great :D but the old man's old 800 Sterling blew up twice in 3 years and needed 3 new aircon units
