Longevity of engines (Looking for a 2nd car)
Longevity of engines (Looking for a 2nd car)
Lots of high milers out there and plenty of 4 year old cars that have been doing 25k per year.
Would it be safe to say that if I bought a 100k car I would expect another 80 out of it ?
e.g.
BMW 320d
BMW 330d
Merc 250d
Rover 75 CDT
Naturally the rest of the car is going to be aging, what would be the top 5 things I am looking for ?
SP (cheers Robin you have me hunting 330ds now and I may have found one...)

Rover 75 named after the average age of it's owners

I have a mk 11 mg cdti its got a older version 2.o bmw diesel and its a brilliant car
tows brilliant good on fuel quite nippy handles great all the toys and not the dowdy 75 looks, best car I have owned so far inc jag bm merc ect
ps the bits that can fail are bmw ones ie fuel pumps & rad fan
autos 10 mpg less I get 45+ mpg
known in taxi circles to do mega miles without probs

Luckily ours has 30K on the clock and we do 5K a year in it, so I think the car will fall apart before the engine.roadboy wrote:I'd stay away from BM diesels with more than 100k on the clock. That's when they start to cost you serious money. Especially the 330d or 530d.

hows about a cracking 03 corsa active 1.0

Its the girlfriends car but never gets used as she just uses my type R, she is looking for about £3,750 ish for it but would certainly do you a deal on it. Not the fastest beast in the world but v economical and low insurance.
if your interested let me know, its only up the road in Morningside if you want a look

Cheers for teh offer but do not think it would be best suited for teh hack to the south of France with the bike in teh back.mrbennybennett wrote:SanjoySanjoy wrote:Sacked my 10k budget to get a 1-2k shed now...."have you forgotten we are getting married in 7 months..."
hows about a cracking 03 corsa active 1.0- only 17K on the clock, full service history, air con, alloys , metallic blue.

hats off to Alix's old L-reg Toyota Carina E. 100k miles on it, sold it to my mate for £50 and he's got another 10k out of it. If that's what a 12-year olf Toyota engine can do, I'd imagine an Avensis from 6 years or so ago would be better still and would cost feck all in comparison to a prestige german marque.
Think outside the box old bean
Mixed thoughts on a Rover, my K is great
but the old man's old 800 Sterling blew up twice in 3 years and needed 3 new aircon units
