I guess if they couldn't make it seaworthy they'd consider options, but scrapping a rig is more complex than you think from an environmental perspective. There are certainly options within Europe, but Transocean have a scrapping program going on at the moment so this is part of a bigger scheme.

Co-incidentally I did a safety moment related to the incident - regarding the change of circumstance between a salvage tow and a normal rig move tow. We don't know the root cause of this incident but it will be interesting if this comes up in the investigation.

Breaking a tow bridle in heavy weather is not an unusual occurrence. It happens more often that you would imaging, especially in the North Sea.
The problem is that the bridle is secured to the pontoon via a Schmitt bracket and at least part of it spends the majority of it's life underwater only seeing the light if day for rig moves and sometimes not even then. This as you can imaging makes inspection difficult at best and usually only occurs at shipyard.

The P&J actually had a letter just after the incident suggesting the rig should be left on the rocks as a tourist attraction.
