How to ruin some of our best driving roads

Post by campbell » Thu Jul 28, 2016 12:41 pm

The NC500 concept is a good one in many ways, but how long until the 50 limits and rashes of Scamera vans appear?

Such a shame. I used to head for Wester Ross because it was deserted.

And which one of you left the tyre marks please...

Nonsense. 4miles is 6.4km, not 8.

Jokes aside. A real shame. Publicity of this kind is good for b and b's but almost inevitable that within those car enthusiasts there is stupid driving (speeding through villages, stupid overtakes), also.

Topgear did the west coast in mustangs and was showing off the 'line lock' wheelspin feature. Could have been them.

I'm not surprised, but the roads are still some of the most remote in the country so will get limited attention most of the year.

We are heading off in the Motorhome this weekend and will work our way round my version (just the good bits), with stops in Brora, somewhere up near Durness and ending up with 3 nights at Clachtol from Thursday. Weather looks poor for much of it, but we'll be happy enough trundling along with the dogs at our feet and enjoying the beaches on the frequent stops.

Hi Kerry
Might see you on my travels. I am heading up that way next Thursday for 3 nights. Mixed conditions forecast.

We'd have seen you too...but Eilidh has cancelled her birthday camping for this year, which was to be at Clachtoll!

Enjoy.

Feel free to drop by if you see us. Reg on the motorhome is S9EEP, but you'll probably spot or hear the 2 rough collies first. Weather is part of the west coast experience, it makes the scenery seem even more dramatic.

Will do. Route is not set in stone but I fancy heading over that side to stop at some of the beaches.

My route this week Kemnay - Brora (via Beauly and Bonar Bridge) - Lairg - Tongue - Durness - Lochinver - Clachtoll - Ullapool, Inverness - Grantown - Kemnay. Weather was windy, midges at Tongue were ferocious - all part of the experience, and a week off with Malou and the dogs was great.

NC 500 was fine - all the corners are in the same place - road is fine, no increased attention to note. It was absolutely loaded with foreign motorhomes, not many interesting cars going about. We did our best to get out of the way of those that seemed to be enjoying the road, but most of the time the single track was so busy I was still behind them 10 miles later.

Clachtoll campsite has had a few changes, nothing that will affect campers. The ground was really wet and getting a bit muddy from the high volume of traffic at this time of the year.
