Maybe when they "lay off baiting"everyone else who is either English or not an Indy fanatasist? So that will be never then.

Queen Nicola is loving this mess, as she gets loads of free TV airtime, gets to shout and bang on demanding this and that, whilst everyone in Scotland gets all fired up about it and then forgets that after 10 years of SNP Government we have a sh*t education system, an underfunded NHS (despite extra NHS funding from Westminster), a luaghing stock of a national (dis)united Police force an NHS24 IT system that's failed again and what ever happened about all those extra nursery school places that were promised in Indyref1?....

Is this what the SNP meant when they banged on about "a new progressive politics"? Progressively worse....

Brexit.

Post by DDtB » Mon Jul 04, 2016 11:39 pm

Worst thing about Brexit is the fact this thread is jostling for position as the most popular one on SE just now ... Especially when you skim through it and read members winding each other up and digging into their trenches and posting such utter tripe etc.

Imagine you'd joined SE today and this was at the top of today's popular threads... Would you come back??

Some folk would do well to take a breath here. A friendly forum for car chat and stuff ... Yeah?!?!

Just my 2p... Sticking this thread back on ignore before the muppetry infects me too...

personally i find it good to be able to talk politics on this thread.
its peeved my facebook friends, and twitter is full of trolls.

folk on here are intelligent, i like listening to both sides. in fact i was educated on workers rights via this thread.

i dont think there was been much in the way of personal insults, which is good.

whether we like it or not - politics is the thing that allows us to afford cars - as its the policies and decisions that help education, safety, health and prosperity.

agreed..

I don;t get the people that say 'I don't do politics' etc, then go on to moan about everything.

With Mod hat on, I'm hearing both sides - TBH, I've personally tuned out of the conversation here as I know my views and I know there are entrenched views on either sides. Agree it's great that the discussion exists - I do think it's a shame how some people are reacting to others, but as Phil says, I haven't seen proper pointed personal insults, so steering clear of any moderation.

To DDtB's point though (and a few others have mentioned the thread content getting pretty salty and argumentative) - would anybody object to a thread title addition just saying "Frank and Forthright views inside" or something? Just trying to please all sides here, which I know will likely not work...

I see no problem with people voicing their opinions as long as it stays at that level and does not turn into personal abuse aimed at individuals OR their views.

Discussion always works better than arguments, very rare that you can actually get someone to see it your way or change their own mind when they have strong views on a subject. As for what we discuss outside of cars, it is highly unlikely that an event as important as this Referendum would slip under the radar.

FWIW I think the thread's current title is fairly clear on what will lie within. Mostly a lurker, and quite enjoy reading some of the posts in here - though mainly the entertaining ones rather than the serious ones as like you say, Shug, most of us will have entrenched views.

Either way, it's refreshing there's a seemingly safe place her on the Internet to have such a discussion without it getting ugly and bullying like that other place (Facebook!).

Noted however I remember seeing a personal insult relating to a teddy bear. Which personally I found very poor form. Though that seems to have been deleted as I cannot see it now?

Title probably OK for now. What it says on the tin etc.

I do pop in here from time to time, and of course there is always the Report Post feature if anyone wants to flag a concern.

Agree to a point - more to indicate that the content isn't necessarily the usual run of the green with the tone of the forum, IYSWIM. Less about content than tone, TBH - mostly for new members checking it out.

My question is, is there a negative aspect to pointing out the content is pretty frank, which I don't see. I see a benefit of doing so, on the other hand.

No need to start changing thread titles IMO. Deal with the personal insults, and allow the general population to decide on the level of f*ckwittery they are willing to tolerate beyond that.

The moderation job should not be editorial.

I propose one or two extensions to the "no personal insults" rule.

1. No hiding behind, "That's just my opinion, man! We're all entitled to opinions". Saying, "I think Shug is a c*nt" should be treated no differently to saying, "Shug is a c*nt". You're entitled to your opinion. You're not entitled to express it here on SE if it's insulting.

2. No thinly-veiling personal insults by attacking the wider group. Saying "All forum moderators are c*nts!" is no different to saying, "Shug is a c*nt".

I think number 2 is being used a fair bit on the In-Out stuff, e.g. All brexiteers are morons and anyone who voted out is a moron. That shouldn't bypass the rules on personal insults just because it's not aimed at one person. All you are doing is personally insulting many people at once. Surely that's actually worse, and should be insta-ban?

Not meaning to pick on you Tut (but I know you can take it :thumbsup ) and those that know you well take that in the manner intended, however if we're worried about newbies then we should all watch how we come across maybe?

That was tongue in cheek Don and probably fuelled by Laphroaig and pain killers. When I talk rubbish I presume that it will be readily recognised, but I had not thought of it from the Newbie point of view.

I did not actually have a "it will devastate me point of view", more of a selfish one that things are fine as they are now so why change them. Different if you have half or more of your life ahead of you. However I was correct in pointing out that there was probably a fairly large percentage of the Population that had no real idea of why they were voting Out or what the consequences would be. Some sort of protest vote, what their friends were doing, bloody mindedness, etc?

Born out I think that when asked again, admitted that they would have changed their vote if they had the chance.

It's a real shame that Brexit (and indeed Indy Ref) have pushed much of the country this way, segregation is never good. I think SE have, as a whole done very well, and it's a shame that we clearly aren't all that representative of our fellow country persons!

Seems a nice time to give a big :thumbsup to our mod team for making this place work, and allowing discussion like this to continue - thread name changes or not ;)
