I think it was Scotty's accident with the german lesbos that showed why it's important to have harnesses nice and tight... like he did.

That's always in my mind when I put them on for a road run etc.

Plenty warnings from manufacturers out there about the dangers of using harnesses without the proper seats etc... that was good enough from me. Some of the vids showing the submarine problem or straps coming off shoulders in an impact are terrifying.

Doesn't help when you see the likes of presenters on Top Gear etc driving around with loose straps ... bad example to set.

:blackeye
I have the standard 3 point seatbelt and the 4 point harness in my car. For some unexplained reason, quite a few passengers seem to feel the need to use both.

I would suggest that if you do fit harnesses, leave the standard seatbelts in situ too, as the harnesses can be a PITA if you are just popping out to the shops etc.

Did you just re-use the standard bolts or fit different ones along the lines of the sector 111 kit with slight longer bolt etc ?

I'm trying to find a kit to allow fitting of the Willans with Inertias at the same time. The Sector 111 kit doesn't work with that.

Mine came with the harnesses in place - I added the seatbelts a short while later. IIRC the harness bolts on the seats were long enough to take the seatbelt fitments.

Wow...Thanks for all the replies! Thought it might spark a bit of debate :D
My intention would be to keep the inertia belt for normal day to day stuff and only use the harness for more "focused" drives.
I've competed in hillclimbs for a good few years so I'm used to adjusting harnesses correctly and having them tight...Doune has that kind of effect on you :blackeye My main concern is that the straps will sit happily on my shoulders and not want to slide down either side of the seat back.I'm just under 5'11" so they might be ok for me.
The Elise is pretty much a road car so I'm really just looking for an extra bit of support in the seat, especially in the tighter corners where the weight is transferring from side to side.
I know that using 4 points without harness holes isn't ideal but if I can strike a compromise between safety and security that keeps my car original I'll be happy.
If it's ok with you Dom I'll take a run over and have a sit in your car to try your set up sometime.
I appreciate everyone's input into this :cheers

I stand to be corrected but think that's just for the Shroth harnesses as it's the Sector 111 kit.

Someone on SELOC tried it with the Willans and had to bodge.

:cheers

What's in the kit? Is it not just longer bolts and maybe some spacers? Buy HT bolts, make spacers.

Even I reckon it'll be easier to just buy the kit

Shroth kit has...
1 specialty threaded stud
4 specialty spacers
2 jam nuts
4 flat washers
1 lock washer

But not sure what the Willans would require and not sure I can be chuffed with trial & error etc.

There was a thread a while back saying just because the bolts 'fit', doesn't mean they're the right ones too. Something about stresses/forces and leverage in an accident.

Might all be snake oil.... but I've no idea!

Not snake oil. Must be High Tensile (HT) steel. Not hard to ask for at the bolt shop though. :)

can you still get CG locks? I found them a great compromise in an elise, keeps your bottom half locked in but lets your upper body move. I hated wearing harnesses, i only wore them when i was racing because i had to, much preferred the 3 point inertia reel

I had thought about a CG lock but they don't appear to be available any more.
The company still has a website that directs you to various retailers including Demon Tweeks but none of them are showing stock.
