Dalveen Pass - what a road!

Post by Bobby » Mon Mar 21, 2016 11:51 pm

Drove down Dalveen Pass on Sunday on an outing round Dumfires and Galloway. Came back same way toward Edinburgh, just with the sun getting low and lighting up the valley. Happened to be luck enough to catch it with no other traffic in the way all the way from Thornhill back to the motorway! What an epic road, both for the scenery and the driving! :)

Some great roads down there. Cut my teeth (and underpants) on a few. Under-rated part of the world, and not just for driving!

My local route when I have a window, a zig zag route down using
  • B7086 Kirkmuirhill to Strathaven
    B743 strathaven to muirkirk
    Across to Douglas
    B740 crawfordjohn to Sanquhar
    Down to Mennock
    B797/B7040 across to Elvanfoot
then onto A702 Dalveen Pass across to Thornhill
Turn round and repeat :thumbsup

Great mixed set of roads, great Elise country, good but not quite as good in a Porsche :(

I got slightly lost further down the A702 and accidentialy turned off onto a rather remote B-road, not quite sure where! Was also scenic, but single track and so meeting a forestry lorry coming the other way wasn't the greatest! He wasn't going to reverse and I wasn't going to argue, but miles back to nearest passing place. Did give an excuse for some photos though! :) https://www.flickr.com/photos/robert_an ... 6139613036

:(

Please go canny on this road as lots of cyclists use it including my 13 year old Son, they live along that road by the reservoir so about 7-8 miles out of Strathaven towards Muirkirk, he cycles into Strathaven :thumbsup

:cheers
