Alpine

Post by cjm » Wed Feb 17, 2016 10:49 am

What are your thoughts on the new Alpine and how does it fit with what people want from a new Elise? I think it looks pretty good, small like an Elise, not too heavy, bit more power and looks a bit more practical/usable. I've never had an issue with how practical the Elise is but making it better can only help sales. If it's as fun to drive as a Lotus and they can keep the price sensible...

It does look quite pretty, although looks more like a coupe / GT than a sports car to my eyes.

Can't help but think that it will go the same way as the Alfa 4c - but will hopefully be proven wrong.

Not sure what you mean by that Dom? Iffy handling/poor reviews? Think Alfa has sold the allocation?

Really like the look of the Alpine so far, will be interesting to see how it pan out.

If it sits somewhere between the Elise and Boxster it should feel more sports car than GT.

I have always loved Alpines from the days I used to see an A110 going up the hill climb at Doune and I really like the look of the concept - hopefully it won't get watered down too much for production.

The 4c seemed to have all the ingredients of a great car, but from the reviews I have read it sounds to be badly let down by a lack of development, particularly in the handling/steering department. Renaultsport certainly know how to make cars handle so I have high hopes for the Alpine.

Was meaning that you never see one. Did not realize that the 4c had sold out.

I really like that, and agree there is a gap between an Elise and Cayman at that price range to be filled that doesn't involve a 3.4l engine. Rear has something of the F-type about it.
'03 Elise 111S - Sold :(
'55 Boxster S - Sold :(
'08 Exige S 240PP - Sold :(
'10 Evora NA - Sold :(
'12 Cayman R - Sold :(
'22 Alpine A110 :)

Very limited numbers, 3000 per year globally IIRC? Saw one on Islay last year & found it stunning in the flesh, much of which is down to size & proportions.

Front is like a Celica, rear 3/4 view is MX5, pleasant looking but not drop dead gorgeous. Always good to see the return of an old name though. :thumbsup

I like that! It has plenty of nods back to the original in the design to be recognisable as a modern take on the old girl.. :thumbsup

The original Alpine (i.e. the really old one, not the 80's Renault re-launch, which is more Esprit looking) is also an acquired taste, styling wise.

I agree the modern one is recognisable as an Alpine.

That's the 80's one (well OK, 92) - the A110 is probably the one most people think of as the classic shape:
