VAG emmisionsgate what now?

We've got one... Audi A1 1.6 TDI 105ps Got a letter in the other day sayin it's affected and to wait for further instructions.

So what are the options? essentially the car was mis sold, may now be de valued or have modified performance after it's been 'fixed'

I would imagine VAG will 'fix' the cars under recall and offer some degree of compensation - free servicing, extended warranty, money off a new car - all geared up to keep it in house.
Customers lawyers will then be looking at buyback or cash compensation - could drag on for years although greed will mean many will cut and run early then turn to PPI type lawyers chasing additional claims years down the line.

I've had the letter today, saying my 102 1.6 tdi caddy saying it has been affected...

I'm personally not that bothered, as it's the second caddy I've had and I have nothing to wrong with them apart from the usual wear and tear. I'm trying to not get carried away from what's been put froward in the media, and it certainly won't stop me from buying another VAG.

The wife's Octavia vRS and my mums 1.6 Fabia are both affected.

Personally I can't see what the fuss is about. The VAG forums are awash with people (idiots?) saying they're now having to sell their cars, they'll be devalued, and expecting to be bought out of their finance agreements as compensation.

They're making out that upon the 'scandal' breaking something changed with their car.

I've always been happy with the performance and economy of the vRS. Nothing has changed.
I'll keep an eye on the first Guinea pigs to have their software updated and assuming nothing is compromised I'll get mine done.
If it seems to have an adverse effect (unlikely I'd imagine) I won't bother.

Campbell- there's a section on the Skoda website you can check your chassis number- I'd assume you won't be affected as yours is a PD, not the newer CR but don't quote me on that!

Don't get it re-mapped then. They can't force you and the car will still pass the MOT emissions check.

Bought a q3. Never really bonded with it even after 3 years. Got the letter the other day. Trading for a new s3 as Audi Aberdeen seem to be wanting to do a decent deal for once...watching the press with interest but not particularly fussed.

Clearly they will be completely worthless. As it happens, I'm in the market for another car, I'm willing to take any effected black listed hideous polluting monster with a vRS, GT-TDI or other sports derivative type badge for £1,000 of my pounds max

I think it will marginally effect resale values as there are enough idiots out there to be put off of the brands, though it may well put people off the healthier petrol varieties too.

As for the owners dreaming of full term pay off's and free replacement cars, they need to come back to reality too. VW will most likely give out some kind gesture at minimum cost (maybe a free service whilst they apply the quick-fix gimp map to your car) and probably a small premium on trade in prices for new cars or voucher for some cash off a new car (especially if resale values are effected and you are on a PCP type deal).

On the other hand, you might just have a leg to stand on if you either:
Bought a performance derivative like the vRS and they screw over the performance, though I'd expect you have to prove it to them so booking a rolling road session for the day before and after the remap might be the only way, unless you find that the 1 litre Fabia S is sudden'y out gunning you from the lights!
OR
Registered an official complaint with the dealer / manufacturer in the past about the fuel efficiency or emissions output etc. being completely unable to meet the stated figures, and can prove it.

As I read it the software changes only kicked in during the Government tests and reverted to normal on the road, so no change to the owner, who actually benefits from lower tax emissions.

If I can refuse the changes then I probably will as I have a plug in tuning box and don't want to risk it interfering with that either.

The way I've read it is the software updates will permanently change the car settings to the state previously only reserved for government testing so owners will notice a difference as they will never have driven the car in this state before.

Agreed.

Supposedly the cars recognized when they were in a status for government tests (very unlike normal use) and went to a certain lean mode. If this is the case, no differences would be noticed or felt by owners using their vehicles in normal day-to-day use.
