Extra long metal drill bit
Extra long metal drill bit
I'm trying to bore a hole through from my garage to the outside, above my up and over garage door for the purposes of running cable through it. I appear to have hit what I think is metal, both from the inside (after plasterboard and wood) and from the outside (after facing bricks). I can only presume that this is part of the framework for the garage door but I'm a good 6 inches higher so surprised by that. Either way, I don't have a drill bit for metal nearly long enough to go through it. Does anyone here by any chance? Circa 300mm x 12mm
Cheers

Re: Extra long metal drill bit
I presume your using a masonry drill, if you have the ability to sharpen it you should be able to drill through the metal frame, just don’t try and drill it at full speed.

Re: Extra long metal drill bit
How about moving the hole a little left or right? Just enough to avoid the beam and mastic up the old hole.

Yes but its carbide and worth about £500.

Can't move the hole as it's pretty much in the perfect spot, at least as far as neatness goes, but if it comes to it...
Sharpening is a decent shout, I'll give that a go first, but failing that the offer of welding onto a bit of thin pipe is spot on
Thanks guys

By the sound of things your trying to drill through the Catnic Lintel above your door. That will likely take some doing as there will be 2 layers of steel plate about 4mm each thick.

Best advice yet Ross, that is what I did in the bathroom, but the missus was not convinced.

Sorry for the late reply was away the last couple of days. Interesting, that's what a friend suggested it might be. Thanks for the advice, I'll look into options for moving it, just have to try and hide the cable runs I guess.Mikie711 wrote:By the sound of things your trying to drill through the Catnic Lintel above your door. Re: Extra long metal drill bit
Looking online a catnip lintel is steel | insulation | steel
It should be a piece of piss to get through
Bring me 1 x12mm drill of decent quality and I shall weld it to a lump of bar or pipe
Or if you want to go bigger i have an old mill welded to a piece of pipe already, but being a flat grind it might go anywhere and it is roughly 16mm OD

Re: Extra long metal drill bit
If it's in his garage it won't have the insulation infill. It will probably be the one that looks like an upside down T.

Re: Extra long metal drill bit
I think I have something which may fit the bill at work which could be procured if needs be, what sort of shank does your drill take?
Also, we have a drill sharpener/decent grinding wheel so could possibly re grind your existing drill.
