Wish I had known that a couple of days ago Robin, gave my latest MBA to Verian, and my earlier one to Luke.

I cracked my screen, closed it on the ear piece, and took it in to Apple, Aberdeen and they wanted £250 to replace it. I was on my crutches and came out with a bollocks sob story, the technician spoke to the Manager and they replaced it for free.

There are plenty of people using the U3415W with the MP so I think it works OK even if others do not. The UI issue is interesting. Presumably the Mac relies on the monitor indicating the dot-pitch and somehow some monitors don't report this in a format that the Mac understands.

The build quality issues appear to revolve around back light bleed in the corners rather than mechanical fit and assembly. My existing Dell monitor has a bit of corner bleed and I have never ever noticed it in daily use - of course I can see it is there when I switch off all the lights, display a black screen, then you get lighter corners than mid screen, but so what?

Most of the back light bleed issues discussed on the internet revolve around people buying the monitor, being outraged by this, then returning the monitor. Typically these are also Mac users I guess if you found yourself outraged by the bleed you could also return the monitor. Dell seem quite happy to take them back.

It's not a 4K monitor. Unless you plan on sitting within 100mm of the display or frequently wear magnifying specs I don't think you are going to notice the difference in dot-pitch between the UHD and 4K resolutions. As most movies are not available in 4K format you're going to be viewing them upscaled from a much lower resolution - 1080p would be best case - so all your 4K monitor is doing is showing the resulting distortion very accurately!

It's "only" about 600 quid ... I would have thought it's worth a punt if you want a 21:9 monitor with "old man's eyes" spec dot pitch ... which is why I was looking at it .

Well the screen on mine is still cracked - I haven't done anything about it yet - was waiting to see whether it's the route I wanted to take before bother to fix it (it still works, just that you can only use about 1/2 the screen). Are you proposing to hobble in to Apple for me and get it fixed for free?

mid-2013 model MBA13. Don't stress about it Tut - I am sure I can afford to pay Apple for it - it is certainly not their fault - I looked at replacing the screen myself but just too much of a pfaff.

Been rocking a Dell U2713HM WQHD VDU for 5 or so years now and still loving it. Came with a colour calibration and guarantee of no dead pixels. Only 2560 x 1440 but I don't shoot above 1080p so rarely trouble it. Price has come down massively too.

That's the monitor I am replacing - it's great but I currently have three monitors (I do a lot of CAD type stuff that requires me to have various tools open and 3 monitors is about right for that) and the other two are absolute gash, the cabling is a nightmare and driving 3 monitors from the PC is a PITA as I need to use two graphics cards and I've ended up with a nvidia + radeon mix which is not good for various reasons to do with VMware.

I use the left/right monitors in portrait mode and they are fairly low res (1440x800-ish), so actually a super-wide screen display would neatly replace the pixels and the physical size would remain constant, a single power supply, single video cable and a load of USB3 ports for attaching the keyboard/mouse, etc.

I'll be selling the U2713HM should anyone want it. Also no dead pixels, superb display.

I've still got my 2009 macbook and have been looking for a reason to upgrade for a while. Only thing is, it still does everything I need it to pretty quickly and I've just replaced the HD with one of those hybrid ones which seems to have done the world of good.

If you wait a while longer I suspect Apple will drop support for your OS version and then in due course the browsers will stop rendering modern web sites and then you'll need a new computer

While we are taking kit, finally got round to popping a SSD in the home PC. Its an old quad core with 4GB or ram running Win7 Ultimate. HOW fast? Best IT investment in a while.

How much is student discount tut?

If you get the full discount with a student's/teacher's validation I have seen £150 mentioned, but if you go through it online correctly no proof is needed and it is £69 discount.
