MOT and Indicators Question

Post by StiflerMR2 » Wed Apr 29, 2015 8:17 am

Hey all,

MOT is due in the next few weeks and I was just wondering if the indicators no longer self cancelling would be a fail?

I found some info stating that non cancelling indicators are fine but I'm not sure if indicators that should self cancel but don't would be classed as fail?

Thanks for any info :D

Non self cancelling indicators are fine. As they test the indicators by sitting in a stationary car and going through the various items like indicators, wipers, horn etc there is no way of knowing whether they self cancel or not.

Near enough every MOT I ever had on my car had me assisting (as the tester could not be arsed clambering in and out of it)

Although I never held in the fog and hazard switches because they'd long stopped latching, oh no, not I....

Have you tried pushing the switch in /removing and refitting?

I'm sure the old Astra self cancellation doesn't work unless the switch is pushed in properly..

Most Elise variants use old Astra switches.
My brother has always had Astras and I remember him having one with broken cancellation.
The self cancellation works (approximately, maybe :blackeye ) by a ring turning with the steering wheel. When it reaches a certain point, it triggers a mechanism that resets the switch, i.e. cancelling it.
I'm fairly certain the solution was the Astra indicator stalk can be located where the electrical connections still works, but the mechanical cancellation switch doesn't. The fix was simply to remove and refit the stalk properly.

He's right. Take the steering cowl off and it's pretty obvious how it all goes together; just made sure the switch units are fully home.
