My thinking on Lotus was that historically you seemed to get a lot more car (and more enjoyment) than you actually paid for. But...the step from eg, a top spec Type 72 Exige S to a comparable LF1 V6 Exige at £63k is about £30k which is enough to make you at least look around and consider the alternatives.

I also agree that the Elise Cup is stunning, but again you can pay over £50k for a new Elise S, which is a lot for a 1.8 litre Toyota engined Elise. That's not to argue it isn't worth it but I don't think you would drive away in one and think you had nabbed a bargain.

Anyhow, there is room in the shed for something else so it is good to be fairly open minded and keep looking. :)

Some cracking low mileage Caymans for similar money that would tempt me if a Lotus wasn't the first choice. What about an Atom.

Think my Porsche Turbo experience put me off Porsche. The reality is that I probably should have bought a 996 GT3 RS or stretched to a 997 GT3 RS when I was looking and when I could afford one. Hindsight is always 20/20 but I sort of knew at the time I should have done that but didn't want to spend the extra money at the time. Live 'n' learn I guess.

A mate in Dundee has an Atom and was helping me look at the spec of a couple that were for sale before I got the Ultima. Truth is that an Atom is a bit too hardcore for me. At least with the Ultima you get a heater!! ;)

A Westfield then a Caterham weren't for you Jim, so an Atom most certainly would be a step in the wrong direction!

Perhaps a ginetta?

Maybe not very appropriate is an Atom is too hardcore:

Must admit that its an amazing piece of kit and MotorCycle News are riding it in today's issue (http://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/2015 ... -march-18/).

Interesting to hear what they say but a lot of money for 2 wheels and definitely does not hit the "your getting more than your paying" philosophy of previous Lotus's.

Jim,

If you do think about the Porsche Boxster/Cayman, I would tend to stick to the 987 variant of Boxster/Cayman rather than the 981 version. I have driven the newer 981 and the electric steering spoils the whole experience for me (compared to my more analogue 987). Admit that the electric steering is probably better than the majority of manufacturers but you seem to feel more "remote" from the driving experience.

I did get a flyer through from Porsche Edinburgh about "Drive Days" so maybe having a chat to an OPC to see if you can get on one of these. We did one with the 981 and it consisted of a trip out to Crail and then some time at the track.

If you mix 2 parts ManUp with 1 part orange juice, it doesn't taste so bad.
