Using Spare Land, be a farmer?
Using Spare Land, be a farmer?
Ive got a couple spare fields, not masses of land but maybe around 6 acres doing nothing and Id like to do something with it.
Anyone got any ideas?
So far Im not allowed ostriches and being honest Im not keen on keeping any animals that require work as I travel to much. Maybe plant some foods? Or stick up a wind turbine? Planting vegetables would be good for the boys to learn I guess and I have my trusty fergy.
Suggestions that require little effort (I dont however expect much gain) warmly recieved.

Re: Using Spare Land, be a farmer?
ha ha... we have 3.5 acres and during the last 3 yrs it now has...
2 horses...
some sheep...
a selection of chickens...
poly tunnel to grow veg is next on the lits...
ive just bought 2 mini 1275 Gt to restore... which will be going into a makeshift VERY large temporary tent garage.
a riding school has been requested by my wife short term, but long term we are likely to build 3 houses on the land within the next 6-8yrs

Whats the lowest maintenence crop you could harvest that would also "keep"? Honey.
Mānuka honey is produced by introduced European honey bees (Apis mellifera)[1] feeding on the mānuka or tea tree (Leptospermum scoparium and/or Leptospermum polygalifolium)[2] which grows uncultivated throughout New Zealand and southeastern Australia.
Aberdooms only Manuka producer?

Sublet to a local farmer.
Rent the land if it's for livestock; profit share agreement if it's for agriculture.

At £7 per foot now for a Christmas tree and dirt cheap as saplings; stick them in, forget about them for a few years, then cultivate.

Yeah I like this idea, might even ask one of the local farmers about it.Scotty C wrote:big polly tunnel, grew your own veg

Equestrian centres / stables etc seem to be quite a popular pastime just now . Renting out for that purpose would probably provide a decent return for very little active involvement.

Problem with the horses is that we have (my mother) has a couple in the front field and shes neurotic about having other horse about.
Plus Ive spent many a night chasing escaped horses down main roads...

Re: Using Spare Land, be a farmer?
Likewise, 10 spare acres that we will not be using other than stopping anyone else building near us, and walking the dogs. Will probably carry on with letting the farmer graze his sheep at so much/day/sheep, and a family that use the top field for their horses. Thanks to this all the land is fenced, so probably sheep/Khan safe as he does not like barbed wire.
Just looking at steel sheds, might have one put up as storage as it is the one thing that we are missing. We went to look at this house afterwards as we had booked a viewing, but it was on the main road with no land, but oh boy what a shed. He used it for his carpentry/metalwork business, and lord knows what the value of all the machinery was.
