A word of caution, in case there should be anyone as foolish as me reading (this seems very unlikely).

If your petrol gauge has been indicating for some time that you should think about a re-fill (say, showing less than ½ the final bar on S2 / S3 gauges), and you choose to ignore it, don’t then also choose to park on a steeply cambered road with the driver side wheels to the kerb.

If you do (as I did), then chances are that when you return later and try to start the engine, you’ll find that what little petrol remains has tilted over to the driver side, leaving the fuel pump starved of fuel.

I’m sure that this is obvious to all, but sadly not to me – had to push the car so the driver side wheels were on the pavement (to the bewilderment of passing pedestrians), to level out the fuel enough to allow me to start it.

Had the same problem with my V70 last week.
Computer said 30miles of fuel left. I parked it facing downhill and it ran out of fuel next morning while I was scraping the windows.
V70's aren't very easy to push in the snow, even when pointing downhill!

Wasn't too bad. Got a couple of extra bodies to push it to the flat bit. Gave it a couple of minutes and then it started after a few goes.
Straight to the fuel station after that.

Not long after I bought the Elise I ran out of fuel at the lights at the Clydesdale bank car park in Kilmarnock. O jumped out with the intention of pushing it to the hill let it roll down before steering it onto the London road. Parking it up while I went to fuel.
The car rolled down the hill faster than I thought I was doing a full on sprint beside it and it was getting away from me, the next set of lights at the palace theatre had changed to red and cars were backing up. My car was heading towards these at speed. Jumping in was going to be tricky as I had the hard top on but I had no choice I dived in head first and managed to point it up the London road. Ended up with bruising all up my LHS and was sore for a week.
Luckily the only thing that was damaged was my pride.

I couldn't find my wallet and had nearly ran out of fuel so needed it soon. Decided to drive home from work to look for it there. Couldn't find it on the usually places, then decided against sticking the (oil less) lawnmower petrol in it and headed back to work to check again. Ran out on the way there. Got a lift home and found my wallet in a slightly different spot there.

ETA, them have my mate who'd rescued me a run in the car for the first time. Reversing very slowly on the heavily cambered street where he lives the front wheel snagged the arch and ripped a chunk out.

Ok then...

When I was 17 I noticed my car needed topped up with oil and decided to pull into a quiet lay-by to top it up. Car was very warm at this stage but I just decided to go ahead and fill up (not realising the risks). Proceed to spill the oil all over the manifold and it goes on fire. I try to wave it out but end up taking off my t shirt and jacket which both ended up on fire. Ended up getting it out by spilling coke over it. Had to go home and explain why I was topless....

Katie ran herself over with her own car ... she parked it at the top of a hill, walked down the hill, stepped off pavement to cross the road and was collected by her own car. Slammed into a parked car - written off!! She ended up in hospital for a couple of days - luckily she got away with some heavy bruising to the legs - the parked car probably saved her as without it her car would have continued to gather speed and she may well have ended up underneath it!

It was a failed handbrake ... talk about bad timing!
