Ring fails
Someone just sent me a link to this slighly scary compilation. Think I have gone right off the idea of driving the Nordschleife

Think I'll stick with the civilised Track days.

Re: Ring fails
Rather morbidly I have ended up watching a few of these compilations today. Some right heavy clatters and some real but clenching near-misses as well.

Re: Ring fails
Why do they all keep crashing on the same uphill right hander?
It looks like there is nothing to it, slow in, accelerate up the hill then BANG, oversteer into the armco.

Re: Ring fails
Thats Brunnchen or better known as "youtube corner" that section is very popular with spectators and is actually quite a bit steeper/faster/tighter than it looks. Apex and exit are blind. I'm sure majority of incidents there were preceeded by "here lads, watch this..." as they get caught up in the excitement of it all and wanting to show off to the spectators.pete wrote:Why do they all keep crashing on the same uphill right hander?

Re: Ring fails
The most interesting crash there is the Porsche 991. Boot full of throttle, oversteer straight into the arcmo, which must mean the guy had the traction control fully off. I wouldn't imagine a 991 would do that on a low speed corner with TC on. Clearly more confidence/bravado than skill.Simon82 wrote:Thats Brunnchen or better known as "youtube corner" that section is very popular with spectators and is actually quite a bit steeper/faster/tighter than it looks. Re: Ring fails
The 991 crash isn't at Brunnchen. Agree with your point though, strange place to lose it in such a fashion. If that's the extent of your driving talent then keep the PSM switched on, as I do !ryallm wrote:The most interesting crash there is the Porsche 991. Re: Ring fails
Looks like the corner after Adenau bridge, the scene of the shortest ever Ring lap as they came on at Adenau and lasted what 4 seconds or something?. A lot of those crashes look damp and it is certainly very variable when wet or damp. Too tight a line I reckon. Too much steering followed by oversteer followed by over rotation.Jeremy wrote:The 991 crash isn't at Brunnchen. Agree with your point though, strange place to lose it in such a fashion. The two BMW's at 5:31 are a good example. The first one makes it fine as it runs out to the outside on exit, the second one tries to hold tight to the inside kerb and accelerates with inevitable consequences.
Re: Ring fails
Never does you any harm to remember what a dangerous place the Ring is especially during Tourist days!
Properly insane, and if its wet you can find the grip changing constantly! Incredibly good fun, but incredibly hard work.
There's also the slightly crazier bit about getting taken out by muppetry - nearly happened to me in the Atom on my first trip there! I think Dom and me will remember that moment for ever.
And then there hitting fluid.
Theres a reason they stopped using it for F1 - minimal run off, and its very very tricky (with 178 turns).
Bloody magic fun, but so high risk, especially when no UK insurer will touch you for cover (yet its covered by EU policies).

Re: Ring fails
Some absolutely terrible, terrible driving in that video. It seems everyone thinks they're as good as Sabine now!
I really enjoyed my 3 days there back in 2005 but would never even think about going on a tourist day now. In fact, I think the only time I'd drive it now would be in a proper race. Less muppets that way.

Re: Ring fails
You pay your money you take your chance i guess. I was there at easter this year and its just your luck really, as with anything only takes one muppet to ruin the fun for everyone. I really enjoyed my time there and will go back for sure although will probably do a bit more planning before hand next time. Good Friday is one of the busiest tourist days of the year there, so busy that a couple of the hire firms don't hire on that day but the rest of the weekend wasn't too bad i'd say. Could throw up a compelation of crash vidoes from knockhill from through the years and it would probably put some people off too... why let other peoples mistakes ruin the fun? Life is for living and you have to enjoy it. If your into cars and track days then i'd say the ring is a must visit at least once, just don't follow some of the examples in the videos
