There are also rumopurs that Ron was trying to get a bigger stake of the company and needed foreign money and that would only be forthcoming if Magnussen was the choice - delay was Ron holding out for the foreign investment & when it wasnt confirmed he had to go with Button.

Let's hope the Honda engine is as good or better than the Merc unit and that McLaren do a stellar job on the chassis. Would love to see a close 4 way scrap between Button, Alonso, Hamilton and Rosberg next year :D

I think this is just what Jenson needs to get out of his Papa Smurf daze. Good news all round.

Now McLaren need to build a consistently handling car for him to whip Alonso 8)

Glad they decided to go with Jenson, Still got a lot of respect for him from the Brawn days, showed his true colours and dedication there which seems to have been forgotten. Hopefully he can bond with the car and stick it to the whinging Spanish.....

Would love to see Jenson say, "Thanks for the offer, but you can shove it. I'm off to sports cars!"

Still, good for him. Correct choice, just took far too long. Shame the SAP colours are so offensive for the McLaren Honda comeback.

Tut, I doubt Nico Rosberg would feature that high on anybody's list of top drivers - he's good but not great - Alonso is up there on everybody's list. Jenson has at least won a world championship.

So of the line ups next year McLaren's is probably the strongest (on paper) - two world champions, one considered the best of the pack, beats one world champion and his dog :-)

You have to understand RonSpeak is not English :-).

Re: Honda & the McLaren board - are Honda on the board? I doubt it.

Somewhat of a generalization I think ... you can call Alonso whinging if you like, but I don't think you can accuse the Spanish of being whinging ... even if you believe it to be true, which I don't suppose you actually do.

Did you read the full thing? Can see his thinking. Also means the 2 best drivers of all time are Scots.

So in what sense is calling someone a Spanish cnut not something against the Spanish - put another way, if his being Spanish has nothing to do with anything, why raise the point in the first place. And before you tell me I am PC, when was the last time you appreciated a 3rd party being called a Scottish drunkard ...

You left out the last word Simon, it should have read "whining Spanish individual", which I took it as, and no problem as you are entitled to your opinion, as long as it is within the rules of the Forum.

So, what should Magnussen do now the decision has been made?

Obviously he has agreed to be test driver but surely that's a dead end road for him at McLaren. If he wasn't good enough now then what's going to change in a year or two's time.. If I were him I'd be looking elsewhere for a drive. This is the problem with F1 now, bring in a driver before he's ready one year later they look like their F1 careers are over.

Verstappen, has a poor 2015 with Toro Rosso and his F1 career over before he's 18

I don't think the changes to the super licence requirements are enough.
