Sports Physio / Sports therapy Aberdeen

Post by ClarkyBoy » Tue Sep 30, 2014 4:30 pm

Hi all,

As part of my accident rehab i have been offered sports physio by the 3rd party's insurer, I need to decide who I want to use in Aberdeen.

Can anyone make any recomendations to me?

Eric Kiltie - did you use anyone privatly as part of your rehab?

Thanks in advance.

I used Aberdeen Physiotherapy recently for a bicep injury (stop laughing ). They seemed pretty good and answered all my questions etc. even though there wasn't much they could do as far as actual physio stuff..

Hi Clark,

In my experience, sports physios don't understand rehab from ortho trauma.

I tried a number and never found one which I'd recommend without reservation.

I saw two different people at Spear and didn't get on very well either time. I'm sure they'd be fine for sporty people with sporty injuries.

The Wallace Practice were better.

I've not seen you since you were still horizontal so I don't know what it is you want to get out of this. One thing which was a real changer for me was seeing an orthotist (corner Union Grove and Brighton Place). This allowed me to stay upright for longer and hence be able to build strength.

Whoever you see, my best advice would be to have a very clear idea of what it is you want to achieve and to be prepared to communicate that in straightforward terms.

... and also to be patient (but I'm guessing you'll already have realised that).

Have you PM'd Jim Crosby?

I'm off on a road trip to Hexham and beyond tomorrow and Friday (looking at TVRs ... but not for me).

I'll try to give you a call over the weekend and maybe nip out the road for a natter.

Take care min. Image

I have retired :blackeye

The physio / sports physio / rehab / training / stuff isn't really rocket science. You are really looking for someone to sometimes push you a wee bit more than you want to be pushed and sometimes put the brakes on when you want to take them off, so the personal relationship with the therapist is probably more important than what you call them, or even what they call themselves. As Erik says, that can sometimes need clear and realistic goal setting at an early stage. I don't have any recommendations (or physio mates) up in Aberdeen unfortunately. Not surprisingly, my 1st port of call would always be the Football Club to see if they took private patients.

I've found the best place for physio is the Sports Injury Clinic at Hampden Park.

Not local to you I know but it might be worth giving them a call to see if they can recommend somewhere in ABZ.

You're the professional here and I'm the layman so please forgive me if my views don't make sense.

My experience of the "sports" physios I saw was that their understanding of how the body "should" work was fine.

In an ortho trauma case like mine though, things have been put back together but not in the same way as they were before.

As a result, I needed to find different ways to do the old things. Ways to compensate for bits which just won't work the same way as they did before; regardless of how much they're exercised and strengthened.

The best example is probably my gait. I would try to explain to some physios how I wanted to be able to walk normally and their advice would essentially be that I should walk normally.

I found the NHS physios attached to the ortho trauma unit at ARI and the ortho rehab unit at Woodend to be quite a bit more tuned in. They were more creative in looking at my problems and finding ways for me to get to where I wanted to be.

It's not really surprising. The hospital physios are seeing broken people all the time. The sports physios are seeing people who're looking to get back to exactly the way they were before.

There are clichéd analogies with mechanics but not necessary.

I hope you see what I'm saying Jim and you don't get the hump. :(

Absolutely. This is key.

I thought Clark was saying that he had the opportunity to engage with one practice as instructed by the other party's insurer.

Otherwise, for sure my advice would have been for him to just keep trying them until he found one which he clicked with.

Again,

thank you all,

I have sent on your reccomendations to my OT and asked her to speak to them all and explain where is want to be (good example being that i know that i cannot do things how i used to but i need to know how i can do them going forwards etc. )

had a really sh*t day of it at the hospital yesterday getting the news that the pain i have been getting of late is not muscle related but infact due there bein no cartlige left at all on part of my ankle, so after a year it will likley be fused in a fixed poistion, so thatw as a tough pill to swallow. there are people far worse off than me i know, but it is tough to see ti fromt hat side right now. im sure i will get there come time.

however, on the flip side of that there is a new physio centre in aberdeen that i can get the use of combined with 1-1 with the pysiotherapist, i will apparently be one of the 1st to use the service so im expecting great things!

Haha, no need to worry about humps

My point about it all not really being rocket science is correct. That falls down a bit if the initial assessment of your condition isn't as good as it might have been and / or if the ongoing assessments of your progress aren't as good as they might have been. In your case it sounds as if there might have been some room for improvement there.

I was very odd, in that I went straight into Private Practice after my  (cough) decade (cough) at Uni because I was particularly focused on what I wanted to do, but I always thought that it was funny that the NHS route for patients was often seen as 2nd best by the patients themselves. That was usually despite the fact that most of the larger private clinics with profiles of a dozen expert members of staff were actually staffed by folk whose day-jobs were in the NHS and who were working extra to get more money and experience. I turned loads of private work away and directed folk back to their GP/Hospital/NHS if it was likely that they would actually get more benefit. I suspect many of them just went private elsewhere... but I had a nice warm glow and easy conscience :)
