Look this is not Alex's power trip. The SNP have this as their lead manifesto promise and they got a clear majority in Scotland.campbell wrote:
The focus of Alex's power trip should be economics. These will affect me for a few more decades, but my children for the best part of a century. In a global economy - for that is what's in place now - you need scale. As part of the UK, we have that scale, yet can still enable our Scottish identity to show through.
That's just reducing the debate to an ad hominem.
There are thousands of people on the streets, from all political persuasions, who are in favour of independence for a huge number of reasons, I doubt very few of them would be interested in doing it just to please Alex. Nor are they all idiots who don't understand the issues.
40% of Scottish folk polled want independence, which is a pretty major group in favour of a pretty major step. Why do you think they feel so strongly?
Do you think they are all just misguided half wits?

I am going to take inspiration from Alex and dodge your questions!
I don't think your valid observations change the fact that he's on a power trip.
We have an established devolved administration. Let'a just leave it at that, eh?

We are European, we are British and we are Scottish. You've actually nailed my point on the head as in where does it stop. I mentioned earlier that the Aberdonians may get disgruntled that the oil money is spent in the Central Belt so do they split off and create a new country "Aberoiland"? You can take extremes in either direction and ask where does independence and segregation stop?pete wrote:
You described independence as segregating people using the essentially artificial defining set of a country, so I wondered where that stopped, do you accept the "set" of Britain but not of Scotland. In which case I was wondering if you'd be pro a federal Europe, ie extending Europe and doing away with the artificial "set" of Britain and just accepting we are all European.
We are a country. What is a country? It's essentially its people, that won't change a jot regardless of which city Government HQ is located will it? Take Europe as the example, one single currency and a central bank but each country is as diverse as the next with differing cultures, language etc, doesn't really matter that they all share fiscal policy.
Re: Independence SE Poll
Argumentative. It's entirely possible to be misguided without being a half-wit. Of course No voters think Yes voters are misguided.pete wrote: Do you think they are all just misguided half wits?
I also believe there are plenty half-wits in both camps.

I don't see a lot of acceptance of the other sides views from the Nos, but that could just be cut and thrust of debate.
I still think it is a good question. Why do you think so many people have become so strongly misguided?

Re: Independence SE Poll
I'm happy to accept the views of the Yes campaign but I'm not going to make their arguments for them am I? I also don't think they are halfwits or misguided (you said that), they just have a different view to which they are entitled to. That's the good thing about politics we are all entitled to our views. Some of the Yes arguments have come from business people whom I have respect for but doesn't mean I agree with their sentiment.pete wrote:Was a bit argumentative wasn't it. As for the 40%, is it not the case that as the yes campaigners feel more strongly about it more of them vote, is this an actual true representation of the total voting public? Just asking as I don't know where the figures come from.
Re: Independence SE Poll
One point I'd pick up from a couple pages back is that of "your vote not counting" in elections.
For the last few elections I'd always been told "if its not a vote for labour or conservative, its wasted" and that you effectively only had a choice of one or the other.
However, its turned around from that a bit in the last couple elections, SNP into Scottish Parliament, lib dem/conservative split in Westminster.
My thought is that independence isnt specifically what would be wanted, but that SNP getting in has showed that your vote is actually worth something.
The main issue is with politics and the expectation that it only goes between two parties. Everyone chooses the lesser of two evils. Don't like the current lot? Vote the others in. Don't like what they've then done? stick the first lot back in.
Id prefer that we stick with the UK, but people vote for who they actually want, not whether they hate labour or conservative less.
Get the independence vote out the way and then the politicians should get on with some actual politics.
Wordy post, and I'm not sure there's an actual point to it but thought I'd post anyway.

Re: Independence SE Poll
I believe that our current Lib Dem / Conservative collation is simply because at this particular point in history, Britain is a predominantly Labour country. The trouble is so many people were fed up with Labour / not wanting unelected Gordon Brown etc, that they needed a change. The opposition weren't really up to much so neither got a majority, and here we are.ian974 wrote:One point I'd pick up from a couple pages back is that of "your vote not counting" in elections.

Similarly, and as you suggested, I remember voting SNP simply because Labour didn't seem to be doing much for us. At that particular time, I think lots of others did the same, and once again, here we are.
