Newbie clam remover

Post by jammacdo » Mon May 12, 2014 10:15 am

Well after seeing lots of pictures of people stripping the entire front clam off I finally did it myself yesterday. Thanks to all those people on the Internet who bothered to post pictures and instructions online. I salute you. But here are some observations from a newbie clam remover...

1. The person who didn't bother to even screw up the NS top bolt (the one hidden inside the bracket near the bottom of the windscreen) cheers, that could probably be the source of the really annoying rattle that I have had to endure for years. I mean really, thanks a fking lot.

2. The same person above managed to make up for the lack of effort on the NS and overdid the OS bolt. So much that I rounded off the hex head and had to mangle it with several drill bits and chisels. I still need to drill out the remnants of the mangled mess but even mole grips couldn't budge what was left of the hex head. Clearly he's never heard of grease or should that be Duralac or whatever it is?

3. It was strange to find several inner arch bolts that had mysteriously floated away between Lotus building the car and the one and only time the clam came off for the radiator to be replaced a few years ago. Same goes for the missing headlight cover bolt. Perhaps they were doing me a favour and lightening the car for me.

4. What the hell were Lotus thinking when they decided to use mild steel bolts to hold electrics to a floppy plastic wheel arch? I mean seriously, they couldn't find a place that was closer to all the mud and road spray. Then perhaps they thought almost hiding some above the top of the damper would be really funny.

5. So the first person to ask me why I am doing this myself I will be able to tell them in no uncertain terms that, even as an amateur I'll make a far better job of it that so called experts. At least I am likely to put grease on the bolts and actually use all the bolts.

Looking forward to cleaning up the front of the car and doing a few upgrades. Might even take the rear clam off and do the same.

Thanks for the support out there, its nice to know there are people willing to comment and help fellow Lotus drivers do the DIY jobs. :)

Hat's off to you for taking on this task. Sounds like the fitter of the radiator a few years ago was not too thorough in the refit - guess it may be worth checking the installation of the radiator while the clam is off.

Well done, that's a job I've not plucked up the courage for just yet. :thumbsup

lol, I did mine recently, some of the stuff in the wheelarch liners were just rusted blobs of metal and my clam was off 4 years ago just before i bought the car. I think i greased stuff quite well so should help the longer term but i can see why it ends up not all bolts being used on re-assembly - I used all the bolts I could find but i did misplace a few along the way plus the few disintegrating screws/bolts and still haven't re-ordered replacement for the ones i didn't have suitable substitutes of
Maybe a bit late, but for future reference i found this a really good step by step guide that even i could follow easily

When my clam was off i also managed to do my first fibreglass repair work using a £15 ebay kit, all good fun as well, mind you the conservatory still smells of resin a month later and only got away with that as I did the initial clam removal and relocate to the conversatory while my wife was away for a weekend.
