European Buyer of Car - what to price at

Post by douglasgdmw » Mon Mar 17, 2014 10:30 am

Folks,

Just had an enquiry from Belgium on the Porsche 911 asking what the price of the car is in Euro's. Car is advertised at £16850 currently.

The enquiry came from ClassicCars.co.uk so its not the usual source of scams as far as I am aware.

Obviously I am wary that this may be a scam but in case it is a genuine buyer then do people normally use the current exchange rate when the buyer ask such a question?

Looking at the BBC and xe.com the rates over the last 3 months have fluctuated between
Low price over last 3 months is 1.18 -> 19,883 Euro's
High price over last 3 months is 1.23 -> 20,557 Euro's

Current rate is 1.19 which gives: 20,172 Euro's

You would think any sensible person could work it out for themselves!
Just use today's rate from Google with the caution that the rate is subject to change.
In any case a European buyer should be able to do a bank transfer from their account into yours in GBP with all charges paid at their end. You should just see the £16,850 appear in your account.
All you need to do is provide your IBAN number, basically sort code & account number with some additional data to identify as a UK bank.

agree with Dark - if you have to email use an approximation, but factor in a 5% variance at least to cover bank charges, exchange fluctuations etc or call your bank and ask them what they would charge for the same GBP today, and make any price subject to exchange rate variance but price correct as of today.

Also when selling the 340R I had a German turn up with the entire sum in cash on a Saturday. Now unknown to me none of the banks would take or confirm foreign currency on a weekend! They would take it, but couldnt confirm the amount I'd receive! Far from ideal.

I took a chance and made £300 extra as the rate improved in the Euros favour in the next 10 days before i could cash the funds, but I did take a big risk taking E28000 in cash.

I sold a Westfield to a Belgium bloke a few years back. He asked if I wanted GPB or EUR. I said I wanted GPB and he was fine with that.

I said I wanted readies and he was happy to oblige.

This was a private sale and he was able to get a five figure sum in Sterling and take it to Aberdeen for me in a brown envelope.

If a company is asking questions like that then they're; lazy or obtuse or not really interested or ... at it.
Slow, slow, quick, quick, slow ...

Thanks guys - responded with a Euro figure and will see what he comes back with :thumbsup

Good idea about the transaction being performed in Sterling which minimises my risk considerably.

Always been a bit wary of cash (did it with the my motorbike and Evo) and always taken the seller to the bank with me to cash the funds to ensure their are no dodgy notes being handed across :)

I sold my Elise S2 to Hermes Delbar (a retired rally driver now dealing in Lotuses in Begium (http://www.lotus-occasions-belgique.be/). He was a gem of a guy and came over from Belgium with the sterling asking price in a brown enevlope. I still took him and the cash to the bank before handing over the V5.

Try this site. It allows you to issue a bill in sterling, then the buyer pays in euros. And all for a flat fee of just 0.5% from the spot rate! which is a fraction of what your bank will charge you.

As I'm paid in sterling and live in Euroland, I use these guys to transfer funds between my UK & Irish bank accounts - Highly recommended :thumbsup
