There are certainly a lot more Porsche's around now than I used to remember as a kid.

The "blandness" of Porsche is certainly due to the majority of owners specing the same colour option so you rarely really see any individual Porsche now. If you look in the classifieds they are awash with Silver. Certainly a different colour pallette with the Lotus owners as opposed to Porsche drivers.

There is still an appeal to "enthusiasts" as not all Porsche owners go for the norm

Where did 'blandness' come from?

Was just trying to say that people don't see 911's as special as they used to due to the majority of 911's being spec'd with the typical "Silver" colour scheme.

Real pity as they lok fantastic in other colours but people don't dare spec them due to resale.

Lol, yes I know what you mean, didn't think 911 and bland would appear in the same paragraph though!
I pulled in to one of our Aberdeen offices a while back to be faced with three white 911's all parked next to each other, you're right, some people have no imagination!

I remember a great advertising slogan from an 80's car magazine describing a car as, "Rarer than a Ferrari, less common than a Porsche" which probably was a fairly effective 'dig' at Porsche even then. Mind you, I think the car was a Toyota Supra so maybe they were covering their backside for not selling many. :)

Porsches becoming more common and therefore less "special".......this theory could be thrown (on a greater scale) at BMW & Audi, and to a lesser extent towards Ferrari/Bentley. All are selling in far larger volumes, making them less exclusive.

A little off topic but there is a sienna brown 997 round by me. It looks utterly gorgeous.

I admire Porsche's engineering but I don't lust after one. I imagine it's similar criticism levelled at the 12C vs 458: hugely competent but a little matter of fact in the way it delivers the technology.

Having said all that, a 12C is in my dream garage.

Yes but Ferrari/Bentley aren't making school run shopping trolleys like Porsche are now - that was my point.

A while back most people on forums like this would love a Porsche, any model. Now I can see them just becoming another popular brand with one or two exciting models, just like Audi or BMW.

I think relative affordability is the main reason for the numbers and clearly once you've done the BMW/Audi thing it is the next rung up.

If you consider the cost of a '80s 911 and the seemingly un-affordable cost of ownership for all but high flying banker types, to now when they are relatively far 'cheaper' or certainly within the realms of affordable for many, no wonder they are so popular.

Having had a couple I can't really fault them, the newer cars are more bland in the driving experience but better is also a reasonable word to use along with faster, quieter, etc.

For me though the cars are now much less special and desirability is seriously tainted never mind residuals  . The apparent success of the Macan is great for Porsche, expanding their range, but it points toward them being less of a sports car maker than they already are.

Blandness wise, the similarity in looks doesn't help them, I think modern Aston's fall into the same bracket, since from say the DB9 on, they probably look MORE similar to one another than the same time period of 911...!

Porsche is simply becoming a victim of its own success. They are selling more cars, and making higher quality products that are cheaper to maintain (than the 80s and before) so more are around and being used regularly.
From a car enthusiast point of view, it doesn't help that they make 4x4s, diesels, 4 door saloons and hybrids, but then, without them would we still have the Porches that we want to see, like the GT3s, 918s etc?

Are they less special than they used to be? Probably, but then we are on a website dedicated to those enthusiastic about low volume plastic cars built predominantly to be fun when driven - cars which you could argue DEFINE special.

I really like that roof. That makes it more special than a GT3 for me.
