Nice choice Brian, I've been out in my colleagues one in hamburg quite a lot during January. He took delivery of the first one in Germany before Xmas. Very nice it is indeed... My other working colleague has bought a brand new Tesla S to compete and he took delivery in November last year. I've managed to have some time in both / driving both. The i3 is very well thought out and I'm sure will be a perfect choice. I'll be interested to see how well the i3 interior holds up to daily use too.

The silence of either the i3 or Tesla S is fantastic, both owners have said they find themselves a lot more relaxed (less road rage) and alert (can hear more especially around town) when driving.

Enjoy good choice :cheers

Ps did you get the range extender motor fitted? My colleagues i3 did not have it as he wanted to challenge himself to fully commit to electrical driving.

Yeh cool little car the i3
Pity my commute is over 160 miles as I'd of gone for one instead of the C class I ended up with.

80-100 miles quoted, but presume that would be for a non-stop drive at the optimum speed.

Real word distance while stopping and starting at roundabouts and traffic lights etc, should be less since there would be more strain on the battery.

Can only imagine how good the technology will get in say 30-40 years time.

I saw one parked on Albyn Place a couple of weeks ago. Possibly a demonstrator or one from south of the Forth.

I did have a look and electric cars when I was looking to replace at the end of last year but there wasn't really anything that floated my boat available then. I'll definitely have a serious look next time round.

I am probably a prime customer for an electric car with a fixed daily commute of around 40 miles round trip and would seriously consider one but for the price. They are either massively expensive or cheaper/ comparable price with a battery lease that comes close to equalling the fuel cost. So I watch with interest, until the prices drop

A used VX Ampera sounds like a good buy. You should be able to do your commute on battery only. I've seen a few on Autotrader around the 20k mark.

f*ck that - I've started commuting in the R8 (640d gathering dust!). You are only here once so might as well enjoy it :thumbsup

Charlotte loves it!

Seriously though, good luck with the i3 - tonnes of them for a BMW demo at CES in Vegas earlier in the month, but never had time to test drive it. The i8 they had there and the new Audi Quattro looked pretty smart also.

R8 doesn’t fit with my range of 3’s, 340r, 330d and i3.

As my current commute is around 42 miles I went for the all electric option with no range extender. Didn’t see the point of carrying a spare engine that would never get used but I may live to regret that.

I was running the 330d touring to commute in which was stuck in a line of traffic most of the way in. I’ve still got the 330d but it’s now the boss’s as her Mini was traded in.

The 80 – 100 mile range quoted by BMW isn’t far off the mark as the current range is between 60 – 70 miles with lights, heater, wipers on, and provided you don’t drive it like a 340r :)
