Am I mad?

Post by smee » Mon Jan 13, 2014 11:10 pm

Trying to convince Rachelle that taking the Elise on a ferry from Denmark to Iceland is a good idea on unpaved roads in September.
Please tell me this is a good idea.

Any run in an Elise is a good idea, especially something as different as that.

Get her to man up.............. :D

This is a good idea, and I'm totally the voice of reason, so it'll be fine.

This is not a good idea but I admire your spirit.

Unpaved roads + Elise = Disaster ;-)

Shhhh Campbell.
If we increase the cost of the SENDER calendar slightly to about £200 a calendar then that would easily cover the costs ;-)

Errm, road clearance might be an issue. Think roads made of type 2 hardcore.

Iceland is a fantastic place but the rural roads are just ash. When I was there back in June (drove around 2000 miles) we had to wait for an hour while the road was built in the north western fjords. Road 1 is hardcore and the roads to the south are all decent. North west are interesting to say the least but for me it was where the country was at its best. Smee, where are you planning to drive to/visiting?

I thought I was going to break the rental car I had when last there, I don't expect it to be any fun in an Elise. Rent a 4x4.

I did about 2000 miles around and through Iceland in a Land Cruiser a few years back but we didn't get to the very north where I think the road surface (in terms of the ring road) is worst. I was not intending on using the in land roads, iirc when we rented the Toyota there was a rule that 2wd hire cars were not allowed on unpaved roads? My biggest concern would be punctures or snow.

Initially I had booked an Audi A3 for our trip but ended up with a small Chevy aveo city car which did well but was hairy at times going along the fjords. 4x4 would be my choice next time I go back. There is a huge exclusion zone now for all hire cars around taking up about 2/3rd of the iceland

Sounds like a great idea to me. It'll make it an adventure for sure.
As long as you're prepared to fix the inevitable damage during and after your trip I can't see why not.
After all, if you can cross the Sahara on an R1 (Yamaha Superbike for those not in the know) why can't you tour around Iceland for a bit in an Elise?
