Hi All,
Further to some very helpful suggestions for other parts of the country, I thought I'd ask the SE massive for any suggestions for a hotel in the English Lake District, and the North of England (poss Newcastle area). We are planning a wee trip away in Feb, with a few nights stop in each area. Looking for something with a bit of character, reasonable level of luxury, and given the time of year, possibly somewhere (for one or other location) with some indoor activities (other than the obvious DIY ones

)
TIA

One that springs to mind is Slaley Hall just south of Hexham - I stayed there for a weekend for my 30th (chr1st that long ago

) with the wife and it was lovely and relaxing with spa facilities.
Part of the DeVere group, so really rather spiffing
One thing to note is that it's situated on a golf course, but I'm quite anti-gowf and it didn't impose on our stay

I've actually just emailed you about a place we stayed last year. Weird...

Dom,
Stayed at the Old Dungeon Ghyll (
http://www.odg.co.uk) on a biking trip years ago. It's quite a famous hotel in the Lake District so would probably check a couple of reviews on Trip Advisor as its been ages since we were back. Advantage being that there are loads of walks close by. However looking at the pictures it possibly does not do the place justice but TripAdvisor will let you know if its any good nowadays.
However I would recommend having a look at Sawdays (
http://www.sawdays.co.uk/) as we have often used this site for stays in the UK/Abroad and we have never been dissapointed. Can't recommend this website highly enough to be honest as it has come up with some absolute gems over the years.

You could also look at Lumley Castle ,the George at Chollerford or the Derwent Manor at Allensford.
The Manor House at Carterway Heads is a great real ale country pub and restaurant that has rooms available but it is a bit remote.
Havent stayed in any of them as they are close to my old dears but worth checking out.

To add - Hexham is a nice wee market town, pop by and say hello to Tony at HHC - he'll be more than happy to talk cars over a brew

Slaley does indeed have a bit of character!
I have stayed there on many occasions enduring O2 Jolly sales japes/events .
Look at Hotel Connexions web site for 50% off deals etc and get ready to blast around the surrounding interesting roads
Given the height and location.....it should be snow covered at that time of year.......so no greyer golfers.....and front wheel drive potentially

Ross,
Your an absolute swine!!!!
Suggested a European jaunt this year to Sandra (with the dog in tow obviously). Current issue is that when the 911 goes the Spyder is a 2 seater. Maybe got Sandra onto the impractical car (i.e. Aston V8, Evora 2+2 or other 2+2) +practical car solution.
Now I see that this is for sale
http://www.tvr-hhc.co.uk/UsedCars/view/497188 which would be perfect for a European jaunt.

All part of the service George
To make matters worse (or better, depending on your perspective

) Tony is possibly the best person in the world to buy a Cerbera from, that's coming from someone who has done lots of homework on such matters, and being an ex- customer

Mine didn't, in five years of ownership - but then it was a Rover/Buick mill rather than the AJP8...
Anyways! Hotels for Dom

Horseshoe Inn at Levisham.
Wee bit further south than Newcastle but worth a look. Awesome setting. Steam Railway nearby too.
