Re: Helicopter crash in Glasgow
I was in a pub 300 yards away at the time. Came out the pub and didnt know why there were so many emergency vehicles about.
Very very sobering.

Were you watching a band? My work colleague was performing very close to the crash but there could be tens of pubs in the area I guess.

Heads up for a moving programme at 10.40 BBC1
Together with many colleagues I've been working flat out on the coverage of this story since Friday night. Thoughts are with all those who have suffered a loss in this tragic accident.

No just in Mono for a post dinner pint. Never been in mono before and we could just have easily said "we've never been in Clutha before..." as both are on the way home for us......robin wrote:Were you watching a band? Watched said item last night, David. Lot of hard work to put over a sombre message at the start of advent, in a considerate and non-sensational way.
Took me back to the Lockerbie Disaster.

My sentiments also Campbell..............campbell wrote:Watched said item last night, David. Lot of hard work to put over a sombre message at the start of advent, in a considerate and non-sensational way.
Took me back to the Lockerbie Disaster.
On a winter's night many moons ago, A very young Mr Boag complete with fashionable Mullet, stopped off at De Luca's Chipper for a well deserved white pudding supper after a long week away from home. I phoned home whilst sitting in the car and stated that I was in Lockerbie and would be home in 90 mins. I set off five minutes later as I was needing a pee..... and headed for a quiet spot on the old A74 unaware of the tragedy about to unfold. My wife watched the newsflash minutes later and endured a torrid time until I arrived home. The mobile network was swamped/out of action and she could not contact me.
I reckon that the plane came down 12 minutes after my phone call................my weak bladder possibly saved me from being caught up in the disaster.

Interesting, main and tail rotors intact but not rotating on impact, both engines with no major problems, MRG intact and capable of providing drive to the rotors, can not think of any other mechanical failure that would fit in with the above, nor can I see how it could be pilot error if the rotor blades were not rotating.

Re: Helicopter crash in Glasgow
With 95l of fuel still on board, contrary to popular speculation, it did not run our of fuel either - unless the fuel pump/ supply failed, but that is pure speculation on my part.
Re: Helicopter crash in Glasgow
There are two tanks, so having 95L on board does not eliminate a fuel problem. The main tank supplies a 'supply tank' which is partitioned in two - one for each engine (one being bigger so they don't run out together). I think the report is keen to indicate that this was probably not 'pilot error', but my guess is that it is fuel related.
Re: Helicopter crash in Glasgow
Would make no difference if he ran out of fuel or both engines failed, has happened many times before, including to me.
As long as he lowered the collective the rotors would continue running at 100% speed as the aircraft went into autorotation. Even if he had no time to pick a spot or flew straight into the pub, the rotors would still be turning, even if at lower speed.
I think that the cause may take a bit of finding.
