I got an xtrail about 12 months ago, nice to drive and so far good in mud, wet fields etc. Certainly not an extreme offroader, but a good value compromise and plenty around. Ironically they all seem to do the same mpg 2.0diesel, 2.0petrol and 2.5 petrol. Mine is the 2.5 pertrol, seems to do about 27-30mpg.

I had a Ford Ranger when they first came out as a company car/van.....it was rubbish! 200 mile tank range if that, 4000rpm at 80mph!

Ended up using it as a personal car and being given a Transporter for work

This; Mitsubishi shogun swb 2.5 td £1,300 Gumtree ad ref 1036387177 (sorry cant create a link)
Had one very similar, ran it for two years and lost nothing on it, would buy another if needs prevailed. good reliable jeep, average fuel economy, just not a great deal of room behind the seats but I still have a set of roof bars if you want them !

A topical topic for me right now... I bought 4 weeks ago a Mit Shogun LWB 2.8TD FROM 1999 with 98,000 miles on the clock. Bugger all service history, drove well, everything worked, pretty clean inside and out, 6months mot and had 7seats. It's a proper tractor but I love it and paid £900. Cruise control is laughable, but has a sub woofer (ooooh er misses).

Delighted with the choice for running to the airport once a week over the winter and pulling the horse box every odd weekend.

Last week dropped it in to have a vibration looked at on the prop shaft only to be told the chassis will need a lot of welding to pass the next MOT. spent £300 sorting the brakes and drive shaft issue, but seriously wondering how much I'm willing to spend welding it next April. I wanted a shed and got a shed. BUT I do enjoy the extreme of my lotus EliseS and then this back to back.

So pleeeeeeese check the chassis before you buy a shogun.

The other car we run is a 2005 subaru outback SE with LPG conversion. Last 2 winters with winter tyres it's been faultless and we get 50mpg.

They are popular with the off road fraternity. Not ideal for load lugging though!

It maybe worth looking at the mud club forum classifieds.

I like the swb shogun. Locking rear diff and decent tyres make it go anywher a Landy can go. I had a 2.5 mk2 from 2000 to 2004. Just sold my 2001 swb 3.2mk3 for £3250. I owned it from 2005. Sold with 80k on the clock. Mk4 will be with me next week. Very reliable cars and 3.2 has plenty power. I always want a manual. The 3.2 manuals sometimes need a new dual mass fly wheel. Its about £1000 for the bits. Heavy load towing does the damage. My one only needed the odd front ball joint. Bits like that are cheap. Milners are great for parts.

Are there just the two Shogun models, SWB and LWB?

Ryannnnnnnnn's landcruiser was epic in that bad snow we had a couple years back.. and she regularly pulls stuff out the mud at horsey shows... trucks and stuff. Nothing seems to phase it, in terms of it's off road / bad weather capabilities tbh

Don't know if that helps, but thought I'd share anywhoo.

Just need to convince her that a roll cage and snorkel is actually a total necessity too now.

My Hilux Surf was just like the one Top Gear tried to destroy.. it just kept on going and going and did all the load lugging and dog carting duties for 7 years. I sold it to a mate for a grand last year and it is doing exactly the same job for him.

Downside was the cheap looking interior and velour seats but everything else was an up-side.
