exige roadster
I'm confused slightly about the new exige roadster. (more than normal)
The old exige had a mahhhassive rear wing, needed to keep the rear down apparrently.
The new exige roadster doesn't have one ?
Is the new engine so heavy that the rear can't lift ?
I would assume that the V6 would have more power go faster and therefore be as, if not more, likely to need an extra push into the ground ?
Was the wing on the old exige just a cosmetic petrol drainer ?
Was it just to distinguish the flagship motor from the standard elise ?
It was very pretty non the less.
The exige roadster in the evo mag just looks like an elise with a very slightly different boot.
I'm just bored and thinking out loud.

Re: exige roadster
The aero package on the Exige was there to give added down force to what was/is a hardcore track based version of the Elise family. Whether or not it actually needed the spoiler and splitter I don't know but they did add positive down force. can't remember the quoted figures off hand.
The roadster is aimed at a different market, more road than track and as such has been set up with this difference in mind. The suspension is damped differently as well as the aero changes. The new Exige shape is different to the old so any rear lift will have been eliminated in the design stage negating the need for a wing and splitter on the road but fitting them must give some benefit when on track.

Re: exige roadster
Yeah, I remember reading about the downforce the wing created.
But i'm just wondering if it was really needed ?
I'll admit it looked amazing.
I had an exige, and a factor in getting rid of it was the rear visibility.
Admittedly, I probably wouldn't have bought one in the first place if it didn't have a big wing, and would have just gone for an elise.
If the areo package with a bigger motor is fine without the wing, wouldn't that have been the case with the first exige too ?

Re: exige roadster
What do you mean by "needed".
Clearly you get more grip with more downforce, but it doesn't become unlimited, so there is still a point at which you'll run out and slide. I don't think that on the road the aero will be all that useful in the sense that there will be other things that limit your speed: bumps, lumps, breaks in the tarmac, the need for some sort of safety margin or even the speed limit.
I am sure the S1 Exige would survive quite happily without its rear wing and might not be that much slower on track either.
Cheers,
Robin

Re: exige roadster
Does not seem to make a difference at KH, but could do on a high speed track.

Re: exige roadster
Needed ?
Not really sure, just bumping my gums a little as I was bored.
Is there not a danger that the exige will look too much like an elise ?
They did this with the fzr1000 + 750 + 600 + 400, and for everyone on the smaller bikes, it was great as no one knew until up close, or with a fair bit of previous knowledge, that it was a smaller bike.
However people that wanted the big bike were put off for the same reason, ended up being a bit of a marketing flop.
I know that the trend just now is for manufacturers to make all their models look alike -
Audi from the front, ds, renaults , etc.but when someone buys your flagship motor, surely if should be instantly recognisable ?
Think that was my question, point (just took me a while to get there)
If it wasn't really needed on the exige for the road, but put on anyway, why don't they do that with the roadster so that people can instantly recognise it as not an elise.
(i know it's a lot fatter, but that requires a bit of previous knowledge and doesn't make it recognisably to the masses)
P.s. Anyone that says they don't care that other people care they have bought the top dog motor, unless you only use it for the track, and don't use it "for a wee drive about town" now and again be serious.
If you don't like getting looked at you wouldn't buy a car like this.
I do realise that this may be an incidental sideline to your main reason of purchase though (unlike harley riders)

Sorry what was the original question?

The new roadster Exige can officially have the roof removed and is limited in top speed therfore spoiler not required. If speed is not limited there is a chance of soft top being ripped off .

was waiting for another write-up before commenting; Roadster is a different car. More supple, lighter steering, not as quick round a track but (for me) more suited to cr.ppy UK roads. I think it's prettier with no spoilers, and as I'm not a track driver (much) and like my toy car with no roof I'd have it over the coupe.
just my 2p - they are both absolutely fantastic.

Just looks like a phat Elise. Not like that's a bad thing.GraemeLotus wrote:http://www.thelotusforums.com/latest-ne ... -roadster/

I just prefer wings and bling!
Re: exige roadster
For many of us on here who mix fast road and track, I would think the coupe would be first choice, especially having seen Kinger's, you get the wing and splitter which I think adds to the looks of the type of car it is, you can take it to Frolics with the lid left behind, and the big bonus is the soft top off in most conditions, but if it does get uncomfortably hot, then hood on and A/C. Best of all worlds.
I believe that last year on Frolic the temps on track were at unpleasant levels, and certainly on Stelvio 2001 on the Spanish Plains, 45degs, especially when we hit roadworks, was no joke.
