Front Wheel Bearing and Gear Oil
Front Wheel Bearing and Gear Oil
Finally my car is getting close to being back on the road, but not that close, finding time to work on it, hasn't been easy, but it's actually been very enjoyable and I've learned alot, possibly more to learn when I get round to actually starting it for the first time.
Right now I'm putting the front suspension back together, the parts drawing for the car of my age show a large M16 (part No. 4 in drawing below) bolt through the front wheel bearing, I have new wheel bearings, (part No. 2 in drawing below) the new bearing is the same part number as the old SKF unit that came off, there was definitely not a M16 bolt through the bearings that came off, does anyone know the reason for this change, and is this M16 bolt important.
Also I need to fill the Gearbox with oil, what is the best stuff to use, is the Elise Parts Motul Gear Oil okay.
Cheers
Giles (hopefully back on the road before the end of this summer)

Re: Front Wheel Bearing and Gear Oil
Looks like an S2 assembly; is your car an S1? As far as I'm aware, only early S1s had the M12 bolt through the hub. Think it was a weak spot, so was beefed up, but that was very early on.
I canonly remember seeing very expensive gearbox oil on Eliseparts. I used Halford's own MTF 94 (I think) as it was all I could get on a Saturday afternoon and was all I needed before first fire-up with the new bottom end. The seloc techwiki has details of the gear oil that can be used.

Re: Front Wheel Bearing and Gear Oil
the gearbox oil i bought recently for my S1 was :-
Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90 (Formerly TAF-X 75w-90) synthetic Transmission Fluid -1 Litre
bought 3 litres from Opie Oils using the SELOC disount code, came in at £30 delivered.
marked improvement in gear selection.
re the bolt through the wheel bearing it looks like it holds the hub to the bearing mounting flange, so without it you would be relying on the interference friction fit of the hub with the actual bearing to hold your wheel on - not good. I would fit the bolt to your new hub/bearing assembly.

Re: Front Wheel Bearing and Gear Oil
My front S2 135R wheel bearings don't have this bolt through the middle either. I remember once I was getting new tires fitted and spotted the bolts missing - called Murrays to ask what had happened to them - they confirmed they weren't supposed to be there.
The deroure list says "Not fitted to other models - Sport 111" but I don't know what the "Sport 111" actually is!
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Front Wheel Bearing and Gear Oil
Good info about the Oil, thanks, and that's what I thought with the front hubs, but I've definitely driven over 100k without them, and no problems, a fair bit of track day abuse aswell.Sharpm wrote:the gearbox oil i bought recently for my S1 was :-

Thanks for this, good to know I haven't got the only S2 with no bolts, I seem to have everything exactly as the old set-up, so I'll continue without the bolts.robin wrote:My front S2 135R wheel bearings don't have this bolt through the middle either.
