Khrushchev tut? You mean Gorbachev. Khrushchev was ousted in the mid 60's by Brezhnev.

I could not spell Gorbachev Kelv, but yes that was the one, with the purple blotch on his head.

She had a good sense of humour, so would appreciate this.

One of the main topics at the moment is the new Disability Benefit changes that came in today. It means it is going to be far tougher now to get the necessary points to qualify and most present and new applicants will have to have a personal assessment. This is being done by ATOS, who are not very popular at the moment

"ATOS have emerged as the winning bidder. 'I'm delighted to declare her fit for work!', said a spokesman."

Another classic, but not sure if it is true.

[Margaret Thatcher is treating her Cabinet to a meal at a restaurant.]
Waitress: Would you like to order, sir?
Thatcher: Yes. I will have the steak.
Waitress: How would you like it?
Thatcher: Oh, raw, please.
Waitress: And what about the vegetables?
Thatcher: Oh, they'll [The Cabinet] have the same as me!

ps:- I used to have an assessment at home by a doctor every couple of years for my War Pension to continue, but after 70 they decided that I did not need them any longer as I was unlikely to be running marathons again.

Very sad news, im extremely pleased to see the appreciation of her legacy coming in from other nations, she will undoubtedly be remembered as one of our greatest PM`s.

First domestic political figure who had any real meaning to me. Someone who took tough decisions when tough decisions were needed.

BBC is fairly lefty biased usually but I thought the Obituary on their site was fair

Being born in '76 I am one of Thatcher's children. To be honest I wish more politicians were able to evoke the type of feelings wither for or against that Maggie brought, rather that the current politician to is trying to flesh things out as long as they can by not offending anyone. You can rabbit on about milk, privatisation, buying your own home, industrial decline, mining all you like I for one am dreading visiting my father in law or red-Wester as he will be delighting at the fact she's dead.

Growing up I dread to think what would have happened if she hadn't been in charge, although the 3 day week sounds nice.

RIP.

Think it's quite telling when one personality can divide a population (se) so long after she left politics. Even more so when you consider that a significant number on here are of an age (like me) where we couldn't even vote when she was active in politics. Not going to get in to the for/against argument, think too much depends on whether one has family links to any of the privatised industries or the nhs. I would say, in Scotland, she did more harm to the Tory vote than could be imagined one person could! I think it'll take Scotland a long time to forgive, much longer to forget!

I think what we all want to see is a politician that has a decent pair on them who will make a difference, have strong ethics and fight for what they believe in. I am not political and don't follow a particular party, but believe thatcher had the right qualities for a PM - whether you liked her policies or not.

RIP

Look at the seven years afterwards - yes, hard to believe we had 7 years of Major! - aptly called the grey years. I had great hopes when Blair became PM thinking he could be like Thatcher. Party politics aside he appeared energetic and ready to make a difference. But imho, and many others, became too narcissistic. Jury is out on Obama, despite a 2nd term. But he swept to office initially on the back of his 'change' campaign. Everyone wants change...until it affects them. Thatcher had the belief to see some of her policies, several of them unpopular, through to fruition. I do think we are better from her 3 terms at the helm.
