Broken immobiliser connector

Post by hendeg » Sun Apr 07, 2013 6:01 pm

I was trying to reconnect the battery after the car's hibernation but I appear to have broken the connector from the immobiliser cable. I connected the battery and tried the ignition but there were no signs of life at all. When I went to disconnect again that's when the connector came free.

I don't have the first clue what I'd have to do to fix it. Any suggestions or anyone local able to help?

Cheers,
Gary.

What makes you think that's the immobiliser connector?

Anyway, it kind of doesn't matter.

You can make it work, sort of, by baring back enough of the insulating sheath to expose some copper wire. Then use two washers to clamp that wire to the battery terminal. So previously you would have put the broken bit of metal over a bolt that is part of the battery lead and tightened it up. Now you instead put two washers onto that bolt and place the copper wire between the two like it's in a wee vice. then tighten up the nut/bolt carefully so that the wire is squished but not so much that it starts to rotate, otherwise you'll break it all over again.

To fix correctly you need to get a new ring terminal and crimp it to the wire in place of this one. Or have somebody skilled in the art do it instead :-)

Cheers,
Robin

I'm guessing since there was no sign of life when I turned the ignition and can't think what else it could be.

That is good thinking with the washers as a temporary measure.

Thanks.

It could be the main ECU feed or the feed to the dash/ignition, .... or just about anything, really :-) The immobiliser is deliberately buried in the loom amongst everything else to avoid it being easy to isolate and bypass - thus I would be surprised if it had its own ring on the battery terminal, but I know nothing about S2 Exige electrics, so anything is possible!

Cheers,
Robin

I'll call you tomorrow and pop over. Is it still a Pauline's Mum and Dads place. In fact if you leave the keys with Pauline I'll fix it when you are at work.

It was a reasonable offer if I was thinking about selling.

My problem is finding something to replace it with.

There is a Cup 260 for sale on PH at the moment but it's only a year younger than mine and with my limited driving talent I doubt I'd see much difference.
