Had problems the last couple of days with the internet dropping off line intermittently. Technical team were very good in trying to sort it out, and called me back each time they arranged to. However they had logged the drop outs, and sent an engineer round on Friday.
It seems that they had upgraded my exchange to ADSL2 last month, but not LLU yet, and the db level had been set too high at 17 instead of 5. He changed that and fitted the latest master socket in the house, and the download rate went up from 5mbits/sec to 8, with the upload rate doubling.
Good result, but does not really account for having no problems for a month before the problem started.

Re: BT Broadband speed
ADSL is more robust than ADSL2 (ie. it tolerated sh*t SNR better)
Re: BT Broadband speed
Hi Simon, also learnt that we have underground aluminium lines from the exchange to the telegraph pole outside the house and that these are more susceptible to noise.
I had assumed that we had overhead copper wire all the way in.

Re: BT Broadband speed
Aluminum underground cable - horrible to work with, crap performance (but a lot cheaper than copper so perfect for BT).
New BT master socket will almost certainly inprove your broadband speed with no other modifications according to a guy i know who is still with BT

Re: BT Broadband speed
Saw it on the news Sanj, good on 'em, though they were still waiting for permission from British Rail to take the cable over a bridge and into the rest of the village.
