Cat 5/6 wise, you might as well stick one or two in there, even if you don't know how you'll end up using them.

My TV has built in wireless, though plenty I looked at didn't. My Blu Ray player doesn't. If I ever wanted to use the smart functions of the Blu Ray player, or even simply update the firmware, I'd either have to buy a 70 quid wifi adapter (with will likely give me too poor signal to stream anyway) or I have to pull out an old 20m cat 5 I have and plug it into the router temporarily.

You'll also get much smoother gaming to the xbox via a wire than wireless.

Out of curiosity, how high are you mounting the TV? I've seen so many break-neck height TVs in my time, and sensible (to me) height ends up with the TV looking strange / too low not far from media unit height anyway, and I still need somewhere to put all the stuff that plugs into the TV..

Our installation manager always (if possible) mounts a TV with the bottom of the TV approx one metre from the floor - has done for years.

We had to mount ours higher than that - perhaps 1.5m up - so that you could see the screen from the second row of sofas :-)

Thanks for the help guys. Not sure of the exact height yet, just what looks and feels right probably. Ill be limited to the height of the tv to hide the double socket and aerial point but these are probably just over a meter high. I am going to have a look around see what there is around £25-£35 for the HDMI cables and then make a decision. On the cat 5 front where should I mount it. Does it connect to a tv or the tv equipment from the router?

Yes, you will need wall sockets to connect to whatever you have these will run back to your server room (a cupboard) where you will either have a switch or your router and everything will connect upto that.

Get a poster of similar size to your TV, put it up on the wall, then go and sit in whatever seats you'll have and make sure it's comfortable looking at the poster for a while from each seat.

I would guess that the 1m height is about right for normal size rooms/single row seating ...

Cheers,
Robin

Rules are there to be broken but DSE regulations do specify that screens should be viewed with the eyes level with the top of the screen, i.e. looking slightly down on it. LCD viewing angles are much better than they used to be, but manufactures do optimise for this angle and you may notice changes to colour temperature and tracking when viewed from below. The screen should be tilted if required.

Agreed.

I have never understood the high level mounting of a main home TV. Other than for specific constraints eg Robin's rows of sofas ;-)

Base of ours is at about 40-50cm. I think people run a real risk of sore necks if craning to higher heights, unless you've got great headrests and recliner chairs of course!

So choose carefully when siting.

This one is a wee bit out my price range, is there really a market for this spec of cable?
Futureshop - love their pricing - i managed to get hold of an Audioquest price list (retail) - they've taken the suggested retail added 10% to it then put a 10% discount on it to get it back to the original suggested price :!:

The gent came last night to have a look round the home. Knowledge was excellent, I got a really good impression that he knows what he is doing and the job would be completed to a high standard however I was quite shocked at the labour rates involved. I didn't know what to expect having no knowledge of the subject or what it involves but it certainly will take a big hit on the budget, more than what I was expecting. I'll wait for the final quote to mull over and decide. I certainly want it done but I need to balance this with the costs. It will be something I'll regret I'd I don't do it. In summary we are looking to run hdmi, optical cables to from tv to equipment location for connection to an amp. Wire in for 5.1 surround sound in the living room. Wire up for projector in the ceiling of the boys room, with hdmi, optical etc and to be decided on sound. Looking at options of a couple of points for floor standing speaker or 5.1. Then looking at doing cat 6 around the home to the tv's etc so have a few points downstairs and in the upstairs bedroom. We will await to the see the final bill but going on what he said the labour rates are it could be significant!

Well started on Saturday at 9am and finished around half 7 in the evening and got the first fix done. We have wired the house for cat 6 so have a point at the aerial point in the two bedrooms upstairs, a point in the to be boys room running to the projector and a point in the main living room where all the cat 6 cables run to. Also have both rooms downstairs wired for 5.1 surround sound and have the hdmis ran in for the projector and tv in each room and will be using a amp as an hdmi splitter so all inputs go to the amp with one output to either the tv or projector. Used around 85 meters of speaker cable and 85 meters of cat 6 so hopefully covered all avenues. Crappy blackberry pics of the current state when we where almost done, need to get better images when I tidy it up. We moved where I anticipated to mount the tv which was too high to a lower more suitable position on the wall following the advise on here and the av guy. I guess many mount the tv's too high as it looks so low, and the high ceiling probably exaggerate this.
