111r k&n induction kit
Has anyone fitted a k&n induction kit to the 190 hp toyota engined 111r 2004 model, I'm having a hell of a job getting the right one! bought one off e bay, supposedly for the 190 hp model, turns out its for the 160 hp engine (I thought they were the same engine, but my brain is brand new!) Any info greatfully received
ps are they any good? any power increase?

Power increase?. hmmmm... doubtful. Mind you it did make a nice Hisssssssss-ing noise

Zero chance of a power increase, TBH - might even get a slight drop if it's sucking in warm engine bay air as opposed to cool outside air.
Only reason to buy is the noise - which can be cool.

yep no gain unless you get the car remapped....i have a piper vis on mine sounds great and on cam manic......if you can stand the noise, hiss then great........one drawback i would say is that the VSV system is not functional and the MAF sensor is very sensitive (as i have found out). The maf isn’t quite happy with the open tube induction and can get dirty and damaged. i find at idle and rpm drop isn’t as smooth as the OEM induction system...probably due to the disfunctional VSV and new maf position giving unlinear data back to the ECU......plus regular cleaning of the filter should be done without the oiling as this may get on the MAF sensor......
the TRD box maybe a better and safer option in the long run, not trying to put you of the VIS, just letting you know my finding since owning one.....

Mapping is neither here nor there, really mate. Technically, the MAF would detect any increased airflow and increase fuelling to accommodate (within parameters that I'm sure would cover the minimal increased flow from a different filter) Fact is, if there's any change, it might be, best case, something like 5bhp which the engine will fluctuate with different climate conditions anyway. You certainly wouldn't feel 5bhp on a 190bhp engine with the bum-dyno, but the sound will make it feel a lot faster.
Your points about the MAF being delicate are really valid though - lots of stories of early 111Rs getting errors putting on the first Pipercross filters cos they let through all sorts of crap and gummed up the sensors.
I'd suggest if you're putting on the filter without oiling it though, you're not filtering much. A foam filter (and to an extent, a cotton one, like the K&N) only uses the material as a medium for suspending the oil in the airflow. It's the oil that captures the dust, not the foam or cotton. If you're cleaning and not oiling, you're not filtering anything smaller than sand - which will damage an engine over time.

Drop in a K&N or similar replacement foam filter to get some of the noise without the hassle of changing the air box.

i might buy a k&ncone filter and fit to the end instead of the piper foam one as its not in the great health...

Hi Paul , My car has had the ITG Maxogen kit fitted for 6 years/12k miles, it's been cleaned/oiled yearly and has had no problems. The kit was fitted along with the GT200 ecu reflash (optimised for induction/exhaust mods) which maybe makes the difference as most cars I've heard of having problems with induction kits have been running standard ecu's.
