Camera Guru Required - NLC!
Right need some help from those in the know......
Have always loved my gadgets, and digital cameras have always been one of them since they first came out, however have just sat on my Canon Ixus 40 when shall we say a little drunk and have farcked the screen, hence rendering it pretty much useless as all the options ar on the screen. New screen about £120 fitted.
So...... have been doing quite a bit of research into new ones, and whilst i was happy with a point and shoot camera, I feel the need(read totally uneccesarily) for a new camera!
I have been looking at other digitals and DSLR's, and the Canon range sticks out in both catagories to be honest. I had almost bought myself a second hand Canon 350d with couple of lenses and filters and lots of kit for £500 from my boss, only used three times, so an absolute bargain! he was packing it up to give to me and then decided that he wants to keep it so now i am lost! Looked at E Bay and not going to get such a good deal.
So...... here is where i stand with my decision, unless anyone can change my mind. I am looking for something to get my teeth stuck into and i need a new hobby seeing as i no longer have a car to preoccupy me - although the wife thinks i should now pay her more attention!
Fujifilm Finepix S9500 - almost a DSLR but not quite,
New Canon 350d
Canon 400d - just launched replacement
Nikon D50
Sony A100
Any other suggestions or considerations to take into account.
Anyone?!!
Dave

Canon 350D!
My mate, who is a professional photographer (some of the guys met him on the Helensburgh run on Wednesday), uses Canon digital SLRs for all his work. He obviously has higher spec cameras than the 350D, but has always told me it would be a great camera for me to get if I was considering buying a DSLR.

Lesley is into photograpy (mainly the little one)
She has a 350D. Best thing since sliced bread. The resolution is ace and if you get the kit that comes with two lenses its a top quality set up.
I will have her camera with me at Doune, your welcome to have a look and play about with it on the day if your there.

Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....
Ross, that is the big questions, wife wants a 'Ra Ra' (Range Rover) which is going to somewhat eat into my cateringvan budget, so i think, and was possibly going to do this anyway and just get a cheaper Westy to start with, then progress to A Caterham.
I do having been in Rich's S1 the other night have a hankering for one again, just a loud mental one that is properly sorted, alternatively Steve's CAT D would have done!
Re Cameras, I had a funny feeling everyone would say 350d, and i guess its good to go with the tried and tested, and also coming down in price due to 400d being released.
Hmmmmmm, I still think the Sony A100 or the 400d might be worth a lookin? Having said that Digital cameras last approximately 3 days before they are superceeded!

Dave, forget this new fangled digital stuff, I've got an exceptionally good Canon Eos 5 film camera going spare. Lenses too.
If you want to get into photography then the best way to learn is using film.
If set on digi then there's a new Sony SLR out now too, meant to be good.
Me I'd go for the Cannon though...

I was looking at either the 20D/30D and possible a 350D while I was in the states. The 350D is called the Rebel XT over there and was really cheap so I was set on that until I found out that new model is due out about now (and I am unfortunately back home) the 400D which is the new 350D but with a 10mp sensor and a lot of the 30D features. It's the Rebel XTi in the states. It's the one I'm going to go for when I can scrape the pennies together.

That's the problem with technology these days, every few months the latest gadget is superceeded.The_Rossatron wrote:I was looking at either the 20D/30D and possible a 350D while I was in the states. I'd say the best way to learn would be with digital no? With it's instant feedback on a nice little screen - rather than waste rolls and rolls of film. Film does rock though.

I make my living taking pictures and have to say that the recent crop of digital SLR's are now better than film in the end. Ultimately there is still more info on a film negative but the methods used to scan that neg don't match up to a good digital file and by the time it gets to a print.
I'm a Canon user and have been since the launch of the EOS 1 in 1989 and still can't see past that brand. Currently using 1D mk2's and a 5D but the 400D is a superb piece of kit for the money and would be top of my list in this sort of situation. Warehouse Express ( http://www.warehouseexpress.co.uk/ ) are very good and do a buy now pay in 10 months scheme which works well (always like a bit of interest free credit!) or the Canon outlet store on eBay usually have some decent deals.
My post was slightly tongue in cheek, and the fact I was trying to persuade Dave to buy my now redundant (I just use digi! ) EOS 5...
I agree regarding scanning etc of prints, it now can't match a digi file.
