We rebuilt Kelvin's S1 Honda driver's side shaft in a rainy car park in Dijon many moons ago ... how hard can it be :-) [Actually, we only removed and refitted the shaft in the car park - we had a beautiful Porsche specialist workshop to destroy for fixing the joint].

Cheers,
Robin

even that took 3 or 4 of us quite a while, with some tools of mass destruction to get it off the car :D

Remember the engine sits further forward when using the Stark mounts, which means loosening the engine mounts to get the drive shaft out (complete).

It's not the end of the world but a tad more difficult than the norm.

Just going to tackle the outer boot Alan.
So hoping to do it with the driveshaft in place. Currently trying to figure out how to get the gaitor over the cv joint without splitting it or taking the driveshaft right out and putting it on from the inside.

You have to remove the outer joint before the gator can be removed (not sure if that's what you were meaning).
  • Remove the CV joint clips.

Slide the Gator down the shaft, to allow clearance into the joint.

Use a rubber/copper mallet to knock the joint off, just make sure you hit the inner hub nut the bearing cage.

with the joint off you can slide the gator off the shaft, clean everything (i use diesel) and check the circlip is intact as this is what holds the joint to the shaft.
The trouble with doing it on the car is the inner joint. The tripod is free to move inside the inner joint, with no stops. So it's very easy to pull the joint out, believe we've all done it (I know have).

Alan - It is easy though.

P.S You're probably reading this thinking it's beyond you, but it's not. Once you start it will all become clear and you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. Get on with it you woos :D

Honda driveshaft problems must be a common sight in french car parks -

If you don't want the hassle of removing the outer CV joint and don't mind replacing the boot you could cut it off and fit a new one using a tool like this if you can find one to borrow.

We have one at the garage but it's in constant use so can't lend it out,

Thanks but ended up taking the driveshaft out as the inner boot had a small tear.
What a bloody messy job. But not as difficult as I expected, spent most of the day phoning Alan for reasurance or finding parts.
Almost done, driveshafts back in, just got to put the rest back together now but think this t-break might be me for the night.

He has had a call from me too but I'm not having any joy. He probably needs more to go on than 'funny noise from left rear'

Just in from converting a pair of TB's for a different throttle position sensor, for a guy at works Westfield.

You're all a pain in the arse :D

Had a few minutes light left so took the Caterham out with new 888's. The things awesome, needs more front camber but otherwise perfect. So good I can't slide the thing anymore, so it wasn't me causing the sideways at every corner action. It was the dodgy suspension and tyres (that's my story and i'm sticking to it). I'm actually a bit worried, as i'm doing silly speeds with no hint of traction loss. So what speed will I be going when this thing lets go ?

It is nice to have a bit of predictable slip... IMHO. You'll just need to be ready with your fast reactions when it does go! :D

Or, pick a crash site that won't impact any of your already impaired body parts :-)
