Exhaust manifold heat shield repair - S1

I've been putting off replacing my exhaust flexi pipe, but finally got the old one off tonight.

Despite my best efforts, the heatshield has had a bit of damage. I read on here somewhere that one the aluminium is damaged, the thing deteriorates quickly. Just wondered if anyone had tried to repair one?

I thought about cutting up a beer can and sticking on a patch with gun gum?

Any suggestions?

We fashioned a fresh one for mine using what I think was called Nimbus heatshielding. Much more robust. I don't think I'd trust to an aly can for long!

That doesn't look toooo bad, although the eyes at the bottom look torn? I think you could skin the inside of it, but remember that there isn't a lot of clearance, so if you make your new skin too thick it might touch the manifold right where that bared off patch is. If you can be arsed to make something out of nimbus sheeting using the original as a template, that probably is the best way to proceed.

you can use heating tape , its thin metal on a roll works a treat did mine years ago try cw venture tape maplins also sell some but its dead thin
I do not use it now as the new manifold is heat wrapped
or guy on seloc will sell you one already formed from nimbus for 35 posted

Deroue (sp?) show them as available and weren't that expensive IIRC. I have shone heat shield material from work I was going to use, but might buy new now.

The heat shield got damaged mainly by the socket removing the closest nut from the manifold/flex pipe joint.

I took out the bolt on the lower engine mount but only managed to move the engine back about 10mm. I unfastened the heatshield bolts, but couldn't withdraw it from the top or bottom of the engine. This is one of the reasons I thought I'd try and patch it (in situ), as it will probably get another pummelling when I fit the new pipe.

Does the lower mount have to be removed completely to allow more movement to remove the heatshield or am I missing something else?

I'd prefer to replace the heatshield, rather than have to do the job again later.

A friendly local garage is likely to have some bits of heatshield (nimbus type stuff) in their scrap bin; easy stuff to work and using the old part as a template it's an easy job. Even I managed it.

Also, aluminium tape (from halfrauds) is handy for any repairs to tears on the main heatshield surface
