Hi folks,
My S2 Elise is making a 'squeaking' sound when turning the steering wheel. It's only noticeable at low speed, i.e. when negotiating low speed roundabouts, when parking, or when turning the wheel while stationary with the engine off. Nevertheless, it's quite distracting. Initially I thought the sound was coming from the steering column itself, but on closer listening it sounds like it might be coming from the area behind the heater controls (steering rack?)...
Any idea what might be causing this? Sounds like rubber on metal, or rubber on plastic.
Thanks!

Mine did this for a long time. Only disappeared when new rack fitted. It will relate to the rack arms moving in and out through the collars (or whatever they are called) at each end of the rack. Not very easily accessible, but at the same time, if the rack isn't loose or suffering play, I'd ignore it and turn the music up
We need a more expert tech view before you can make up your mind however.

Thanks for your reply, Campbell.
Doesn't sound promising... car has only covered 23K miles, so I don't expect to be replacing the rack for a while (I know that the S1 racks didn't last long, but I believe that they improved durability for the S2?).
Och well, shall keep an open mind (and a closed wallet!).

I've 66000 miles and squeaks as yours does. No play and it's not deteriorating so not going to worry about it. Many other squeaks that are coming and going, although I did contemplate trying to fire some lube in there to see if it helped - but probably no point.

Hi Tommy,
I suffered from what sounds like an identical squealing from the steering column recently. Mine was caused by a dry bush (honest

).
MMC cured it for me by squirting about a full can of lube at the offending part. Took a couple of applications and a couple of days for the lube to soak fully into the offending part, but the squeal has gone completely now.
Think they managed to access the steering bush via the footwell without having to dismantle anything. Craig at MMC could offer a fuller explanation of cause/cure.
Ally.

Thanks Ally - car still has its MMC warranty, so I'lll probably go for that.
We all like a tight bush, but a dry bush is seldom welcome
