The only good thing to come out of it is that BBC would have probably lost it completely in 2013, whereas at least now they keep half of it until 2018.

F1 is fcuk.

Small engines, Sky TV... No one will want to watch it - let alone pay for watching it.

Have a Sky Sports subscription so at least its an excuse to keep it going. However I have loved the BBC coverage as they have increased their game substantially over the last year (especially as there is no gripe about HD coverage now)

May have to investigate jobs in Sky though if employees get their channels free. Are the saucy ones free as well, if so even better excuse to update my cv.

Sky employees get half price pay per view.

Most will probably disagree with me here but I would actually rather the F1 was pay per view. At least that way it would be better value for money, as I'm only paying for the stuff that I would watch instead of almost an extra £20 per month for channels I will only watch 4-8 times a month. I would even prefer a F1TV, like some of the football team tv channels, as then it's all F1 based and (although I haven't done my research) likely to be cheaper than shelling out for the sports packages. I don't think it will be broadcast on only Sports one. If there's something else on that day they would move it to another sports channel, so reckon we would need all sports channels.

This isn't a step forward, it's three steps back. I really enjoy the build up (sometimes even more than the race itself) and I think EJ, Jake, DC and Brundle make it so. The laughs, the sarcasm, the interviews, the features, everything about it is fab and I'm going to make sure I watch every single bit of what's left of this years season.

That's a very good strategy. "Lisa...Jen's got this great idea..." <whack>

Christian Horner spoke really supportively of the Beeb. "They set the standard, worldwide".

What I'm now struggling to reconcile is this postulation by Bernie that it will increase viewing. How? Is there anyone who's got Sky but not BBC? Er, doubt it? In which case, how is adding coverage on a service where you have to pay (significantly) more than presently to watch the sport, going to ADD viewers?

I also can't fathom how the Beeb is actually saving much money by dropping half the races. I presume there will be a commensurate drop in their pre- and post-race productions. On days when they are live, they'll do a half-baked effort with one or two of the existing presenting team, but on days when they are on highlights/deferred re-run, will they just wheel out Sue Barker saying "And welcome to Wimbledon, sorry F1, and here is the race. Not sure what went on but 3 guys stood on a big step and poured champers all over each other after about 100 minutes...mmmm, looked like my fave brand too. Enjoy!"

Jeez.

I don't watch F1 but everyone agrees their F1 coverage excels. They stopped showing it to save money, because News International will have outbid them.

It's futile to look at the BBC's other output and try and blame that, it's at fault because Cameron and his cronies have forced a funding Cut on the BBC. Cronies that include senior advisers currently on bail under investigation for crimes they committed whilst working for News International. Although I doubt they or their bosses ever suggested to DC that the BBC should have it's funding cut in the many many lunches or dinners they all enjoyed together.

Good spot, but pointless IMHO.

Well we're meant to be cyling round Great Cumbrae island tomorrow but I'll do what I can to take in the F1 all weekend, the Forum will surely be full of this controversy.

Things like iPlayer functionality have made F1 on the BBC something awesome in my view, and this weekend will be a good example of how I've made the best of this kind of facility. I already pay my license fee to do this. I certainly ain't paying Sky for whatever they come up with, which I assume will be inferior (just watched their 3 min news bulletin online and the picture quality was not a patch on the BBC news).

End of. Bedtime :-)

Only ever used I Player for F1, says it all really
Sky in my experience is just a horrendous amount of ads and although it may be fruitless have all family members signed up to the petition :thumbsup

BBC's F1 coverage costs £40 million a year. They could save some money by - stop sending someone back to the 1980's to buy DC's horrendously tight White strides. Stop sending someone to oxfam to gets EJ's shirts and glasses from the specsavers budget glasses. Then take the bloody ipad from jake that he never, ever uses, but insists on carrying everywhere.
