Gas and Electricity.

Post by pete » Tue Jun 21, 2011 4:50 pm

We've just got our household bill, inexplicably the first for 9 months...

Tunrs out our Direct Debit has not been covering our bills, we've been paying 80 quid a month, the short fall is 1100 pounds. So we should have been paying about 190 a month.

Errrm how much do others pay for gas and electric combined (if you don't mind me asking)?

Pete

(We don't heat all our house, all the time).

Sounds not too far off for a place like yours? I pay a lot less, but as you know for a much smaller and more modern house.

Bugger me.

Just had an entertaining conversation with a very nice lady at EON who agrees with me this is a scandal (they should have been taking the money regularly to avoid surprises like this), but disagrees with my frankly impeccable logic that the best way forward is for us to call it quits and start again.
Ah well it's a form of sport... (The new supplier hasn't been taking enough money, our usage hasn't actually changed since last year).

We were paying £83 per month for Gas and £102 per month for Electric.

This had been going on for some time and I suddenly thought the electric seemed a bit high. (I'm not surprised by the gas as Laura constantly has the heating on and it is like a sauna in our house). Couple of months back I called up to check the status of the account. The gas payments were pretty much covering the usage but we were £600 in credit on the electric!

They gave us a refund and we now pay £36 per month for electric. Gas has stayed the same.

We pay £120 a month for both that covers us pretty well. Paying too much in the summer which covers the winter.

We used to pay £170 until Lynda shopped around :thumbsup

We pay £55 a month for leccy and gas is variable as account based on actual read were at about £300 a month over winter about £50 now. Reckon gas average is about £170 pm.
We had the same issue as you Pete- when we moved in payment was under but they didnt bill us and were £900 short. I was told it is a ploy to stop customers switching as you would need to pay it off before you 'leave' so you end up paying it monthly over x months and they have you hooked until you catch up.

E.ON have just put my StayWarm bill up from £115 to £191 for electricity alone, even though I have stayed within their guideline limits. If I had paid for it by units it would have been around £130, in fact I could go onto that now but StayWarm is subsided and they can not see that they are doing the opposite and charging me £60 more.

As they can not now change the price for a year I will play them at their own game and go back to the old days of using electric heating to supplement the oil. They will throw me off at the end, but then I will go onto one of their other plans.

You can train them out of that whole "keeping the heating on" thing you know...

That makes me feel better you are using about half the gas but the house is about half the size and ours is a lot older. Although we only heat half of ours and I buy a lot of wood to burn as well

About £105 a month for gas and elec joint through E.ON. Switched from Scottish Power and Scottish Gas a couple of years ago and saved around £30 per month right away. I now await the hikes...they have written to offer me a Fixed Rate for 2 years, albeit at 9% above current std pricing. So I've elected to wait it out and will happily switch to someone else with a special offer if I get taken for a mug by these guys.

Changing energy supplier is the new 0% credit card switch I reckon :-)

Oh, and our house is a 4 bed detached, of modern (well 80s) timber frame design with a trad build extension carrying more insulation than you can actually fit into it

We felt a tangible change in the heat retention when our already insulated loft was properly insulated by the energy grant people, to the right depth. Roasty toasty in winter, with heating definitely down a couple of notches from before, although sometimes hard to dissipate the heat build up upstairs in summer when heating is off (summer, what summer...).

We are looking at putting a multi fuel stove in the lounge in place of the open fire. It's about the only option that will pay for itself over a short time compared to our oil useage, and it should keep the lounge much warmer.

Everything is in place for connecting up, so it is really only a case of pulling the old fire out and fitting the new stove in. We have gone for the biggest we could find, around 100,000btu output and costs £1,400.
