Hey! There is a loud rattling kind of noise coming from the alternator direction in my s1. The rattle kicks in at about 3k rpm, and the top pivot bolt turns in the bracket. Tried tightening up the bolt but cant seem to get a grip on the bolt end!
My fuel pump also seems to be getting louder and louder too! My knowledge is next to nil so any help would be great!
Or should i just dig deep and throw it into a garage!!?

Fcuk a rat Jamie, just realised that it is you. Clare said that she had shown you how to adjust it after talking to Craig, but did not realise that you still had problems.
Are you home next weekend, if so we can look at it, otherwise call out the AA and get them to sort it, if not you have P&L.
Cheers

With the engine off and the keys in your pocket (so no fcuk can crank it while you're rummaging in the engine bay), reach down and grab hold of the belt. Is it loose? Can you make the alternator move back and forth a little?
I suspect the problem is one of the two bottom bolts - one near the crank often shears off in the block!
You might be able to tension it up again enough to get you home and then get somebody here (well there) to look at it.
The top bolt nut is captive in the alternator housing, so you just turn the head of the bolt.
All of this best done from inside the wheel arch with the wheel and liner removed.
Cheers,
Robin

Jamie, is the alternator charging OK, if not you will have the red light on, and the battery will run out, but suspect that is not the case.
Are you home next weekend?

Thanx Robin, there is a little bit of play in the belt but not much, and the alternator can be moved back and forth a little. I did tighten up the bottom bolt as I noticed it was slackened, it hasn't made any differance to the noice tho.
Tut, I might be home tomorrow if my car allows it! Get her in the garage sunday for some tlc hopefully!!
Cheers,
Jamie
