Re: Service Options

Post by SAJ » Wed Feb 09, 2011 6:07 pm

Had my brakes, servicing and timing belt done just the other week from SLS. First time i've used them and been very happy with them.

My engine mounts need replaced too, so just waiting on them getting delivered and then the car will be back in to SLS.

I haven't had a service done at MMC but they changed my radiator and heater resistor under warranty a few months back and the service I got from them was also good too.

My Elise is due for a service & MOT soon and I'm debating whether to use Murray or SLS.

I don't think either will do an in-house MoT.

Another option for the service aspect is SW Motorsport, based in the Bush Estate, near Penicuik, up the road from SLS.

And for fairness, neither do Dan, MMC, Falkland, the guy up the road that MacK mentioned and countless other garages.

Now that you have an official part to play in SLS Mark, I don't think it's really appropriate that you make posts such as this anymore. No idea what the other mods think (opinions welcome!) but my opinion is that in the spirit of the SE charter you should keep any future SLS info to the announcements and offers forums.

And to be clear I don't think Dan, MMC etc. should be allowed to make such posts either (which afaik they don't tend to).

I've basically just commented on a post which could easily be miss interpreted to read that SLS do not offer an MOT service which they do. I have not made any offers or announcements? Just contributed to the thread as everyone else has!

So what is it I should read to find out what is acceptable to you and what is not. I will gladly abide by any forum rules but have seen posts from other garages in threads stating they can do something! If I have any offers or announcements I will endeavour to post these in the apropriate section.

Mod guidance is always welcome and apriciated as I'm new to this type of thing now :thumbsup

Thanks

You're no longer just an SE member though, you're an SE member with an interest in promoting the business you have a partnership in and that business also happens to depend highly on the members of this forum so that's why I posted what I did. FWIW I'm sure Dan (correct me if I'm wrong Dan) has had stuff moderated before because it was felt it wasn't appropriate.

As for the charter, it's at the top of the general page. Campbell created it so it's nothing to do with me but it was approved by all the mods some time ago so it's not what's acceptable to me but SE as a whole.

Take your point about it being mis-interpreted and Robin said the same so fair enough. I just wanted to get the point across because I don't think it's in anyone's interest to potentially have the competing business owners on here each touting for business when someone asks where they can get their car service/MOT done.

Hope that makes sense and if it doesn't I'll try and explain it again.

Not that I can remember Simon. But I am getting old and the memory is fading. :D

I tend to post in the same way on here as I do on SELOC where I am not an advertiser so would be pulled up for the slightest thing, should I attempt to tout for business.

TBH, I've normally got far too much on to worry about finding work. The joys of being lazy and having very low overheads. ;)

Personal testimonials are allowed, based on real experiences [SE Charter sub-section 8.2.5, para 34, clause iii) ;-)] - so no worries there.

In fact, if I could just draw The Congregation's attention right now, to the exact treatment of this matter in our Holy Charter, it readeth:
The SE Charter wrote: - Personal testimonials and recommendations to try a particular supplier or product etc are acceptable in the course of general on-topic posting

- If you have something to sell (essentially any personal item that is legally yours to sell, not commercial trading) put your ad in the Classifieds sub-forum

- Outright sales pitches, campaigns or adverts are generally discouraged, however if you are launching a new venture etc please do contact the Admin team as we do want to encourage the prosperity of our bona fide members!
The whole 2 screenfuls are here. If you are not familiar, please give it a quick read now.

Any further issues with Commercial operators on SE, by PM to a Mod, please. Let's not have this (or any other) thread degenerate.

thanks

Sorry, was just stating what I thought to be true, and has been confirmed by you, that neither SLS or MMC (or do they?) do Mot's 'themselves', neither do lots of other garages or specialists, including Dan (?) and SW who I mentioned.

It was in no way a criticism, just a qualified (by "I don't think") statement that if M1ckey was expecting an MMC or SLS stamp on their MoT cert, it wouldn't happen.

To be fair Simon, you have singled out Mark for criticism when it is apparent there are others guilty of infringing the current rules with "above the line" or subliminal business messages.
I subscribe to the right to "tell everyone when you have had a good/bad experience" on the forum..........and if you have something to offer that you deem to be of worth to the wider community ......post it up on SE Offers.

I wish Mark and Ali all the best in taking their venture forward, as we all have a vested interest in having a choice when it comes to having our cars serviced.

Mr Boag makes a good point, and I imagine I'm not the only SEer who has recently got tired of such subliminal messages.

My 2p (which is likely of low value  ):
I have long held the view that anyone who ever posts anything to do with a business they are involved in, should be required to make it clear they have a connection in their sigs. Without this, there are often times when promotions can appear as testimonies unless you're in the know.

Arguably a grey area, and I'm probably opening a can of worms writing that!

Agree with Iain there, we have to be careful how far this is taken. If one of us has a HGF, then it makes sense for Ali, Dan etc to let us know that they can repair it for under the AA's £500. That is saving us money and we can decide who we go for.

I am sponsored by John Duthie, DuthieMotors, he is all over my car, but if I feel that he has something to offer S_E that is worthwhile, then I have posted. We have Solicitors on here that have offered their advice and services, again to our advantage.

I think this is different to blatant advertising which is easy to spot.

The 'Can Se help you through the recession' thread which was kicked of by Dom allows individuals to post up what they do and advertise their business. Something similar as a sticky would give a readily available list of contacts for services which may be of use- as long as it is left uncluttered with 'can you' or 'I used/ recomend' then it serves as an ongoing ad board without cluttering other threads.
